Scored a PC from a friend that has this chip in it. The Athlon is running between 48C-55C. My other PC at home is a P4 630 @ 3.00GHZ, I have Thermalright Ultra 90 on it with a 120mm fan and the temps never go above 45C. I know the Athlons run hot, but what is a good temp for the 3000+. I don't want to buy an expensive cooler only to find out the temps before were normal. I have read some places saying 50c is fine but not over and others saying 60 are fine. I have been out of the desktop scene for while.

IIRC, those chips all run hot. I had a 3000+ 400FSB that ran about 45C idle, between 50-60 under load with aftermarket cooling. You can try reinstalling the HSF, sometimes there's either too much or too little thermal paste and you get higher temps. What cooler is being used on the Athlon?

I run s@h 24/7 on my mom's barton xp 2500+ with a minor oc. it has a thermaltake volcano 10 hsf and usually runs btwn 57-60c. It has been running almost nonstop for 3 mos now. The only problem the system has had was when I tried to replace the 9800 pro with a geforce mx 4000 pci. It gets better, since I had sold the 9800 pro, only to have it get demolished in shipping...damnit...

Pulled it off and replaced the past with AS5. Temps seem to be alittle better know. Dropped to 45 Idle and 50-55 Load. Still going to try a better cooler though just not used to such high temps.

2can, the only way I got them down to what I considered "good" was with a Vantec 80mm Tornado on a Thermalright SLK-800(900?)U, but I couldn't stand the Tornado's noise...

Seeing the other temps, I am fine with what I am seeing. This is using an AVC generic cooler so I am guessing it will only get better with the SLK900 I will be getting. Thanks all

The Bartons run hot compared to the subsequent generation. Don't worry about it.

55-60c is normal. I had a Barton 3200+ (2.2 GHz) at 2.5 GHz with no voltage increase that ran at 60-65 under load with no problems for years.

My old barton ran at 70-72 at full never had a problem with it. Those chips can take a beating.

Yep, I have a Barton 2500 OC'd to 2.2 and it's been that way for years now, running as a word processing/web surfing and email box for my girlfriend. I think I could get away with another two years out of it and she'll be fine and even when it is time to upgrade, I doubt the chip will need to stop working.
