I just put a spire Whisperrock on my Athlon XP 3000 333, and my system is reporting a core temperature of 58-59 degrees C. What's a safe/optimum temp for this processor? What's the absolute hottest before I should worry about having a liquid chip on my board?

It totally depends on the board. Sometimes the same board will still give very different temperature readings depending on the BIOS revision too. What motherboard is this?
Here's something to check on, however: applies to your heatsink too, I believe. The clip may not slide in your heatsink as freely as the Thermalright clips do, but I believe it can still be moved in the heatsink with a bit of force, so check to ensure that it hasn't sneaked over towards the raised end of the CPU socket.

My board's a Gigabyte GA-7vt600 1394. I'll check that clip thing, but I don't think it's raised up. I was just curious if there was a temperature max to avoid.
that's what i was worried about...I previously had a thermaltake Aquarius II. It wasn't too bad, but it started growing stuff and took up too much room in the case. My theory was that it actually held in the heat rather than dissapating it. It was hard to tell, becuase it was cooling an Athlon 1800, and I switched to the 3000, so I wasn't sure about the temp. The 1800 stayed at 46 with the liquid cooling. Any advice on how to get the temp down?
thats fine, bartons run hot, unless it goes over 65-70 then id worry, but 59/60 is what I run at.
ok, that's good to know. I checked to see if it was off the clip, but it's not. I'm concerned that maybe the ceramique I put on the die didn't coat the whole thing. I'll probably take the heatsink off next weekend and reapply.
i hava a giga-byte ga-7vaxp ultra and have noticed that it always reported temps somewhat high. i wouldn't worry about it
I would be too worried about your current temps. if they raise to 70C+ THEN i would start to worry. but as of now youre in the safe zone.
The maximum die temperature for AMD Athlon XP 3000+ is 85C. But you would experience a lot of problems before you got there. My belief is that the hotter a CPU runs, the shorter its lifecycle will be. As long as your system is not hanging or rebooting by itself, I do not see why you should have to worry.

I see so many questions about temp, whether it is ok or not...
Too tell you the truth I don't give a sht what the temp looks like, the mb(or proc in that respect) might easily have a bad sensor and then it's useless.
The easiest way to say whether temp is ok or less so is the stability indicator, which as far as I know is available in each and every system, beside it costs nothing
If your system is rock solid, then why would you care about temp? Never heard of a proc that just died without stability problems. I usually tend to let the system run at a higher temp since I hate everything noisy(i got special case which does a great job, but it's not the perfect ueber silent case) and still never had a problem. When I had proc problems it was only because of my fault(cracked the proc, unlocked it the wrong way or whatever else). Neved did a proc fail on me because of temp.
I run a tb 800mhz in my dial-up server(firewall and whatever else) with the fan set to 5v(temp stays always around 60) and never had a problem(3 years since it runs like that). Around one year ago the fan went straight in hell(it died too soon to go in heaven), so the proc was running with passive cooling(relatively small aluminium block), and it runned so for days. Not a single problem. Ah, that server is on 24x7x36[56]
So, as long as you are stable, don't worry, be happy.

my system did reboot once the other day for no reason, but I don't think it was becuase of temp. It reboots when it wants to about once every month or so. I've noticed that every system I've built has one or more emotional problems, but they don't seem to amount to much. I think I'm still gonna redo the heatsink installation and make sure the whole die is coated this time
As an FYI, the whisperrock is a little bit under-powered for your system. The Falconrock (also from Speeze) is better suited. If you can switch the two you will see better results (high 40's to low 50's under load) of course depending on ambient temps.
To be honest, I would also say that your temps are fine, a little higher than I like to run, but certainly not dangerous.

I did check the falconrock when I bought this one, and I just wanted something quiet. I found it interesting that they're both the same size, both have the same voltages, both move the same amount of air, both are made of the same core, both have the same RPM rating, and one is 4 dBa louder and rated as supercool....I guess I just don't get it.
Redid the heatsink today, and it now runs 57 under med load, so I knocked a few degrees off. I would like it around 46 (where my old one used to be), but i guess that just won't happen this quiet. I may change out for the falcon, but it won't be for a while.

oh yeah...and the ambient temp while cpu runs at 57 is 45, which is weird because when the old cpu ran at 46, the case temp was 56....
Sounds like a possilble software or hardware sensor problem. Your CPU temp will always be at least a few degrees hotter than the motherboard temp.

I've got a 2500-m running w/ a TT Volcano 9 right now running at 2.0Ghz that runs at 50C under normal windows use which seems a bit high. Would the Falcon be a better buy than the Volcano?
The Whisperrock is all aluminum. The Falconrock is copper/aluminum, hence it is more effective. BTW: @25dba the Falconrock is very quiet. I would actually tend to doubt you would even hear it outside the case. The Falconrock will definitly keep you in the high 40's idle in the summer and low 40's in the winter. Not bad by my standards!

Those temps will be next to impossible for kcbass to reach now. He said he has an ambient temp of 45C (where are you, in Iraq?). With a guesstimate of +5C in case temps over ambient, sub 60C temps are less than 10C over case temps -- quite respectable numbers.
Your earlier numbers with a cpu temp lower than your case temps is impossible on air. It's more likely that those figures were reversed, with the case being at 46C and the cpu at 56C.
Ive got an OC BArton 2500+ to 3200+ (the 400FSB in ) and the temperature is max 63 so i say from 45 to 65 is OK on every XP
) and the temperature is max 63 so i say from 45 to 65 is OK on every XP I'm using the copper replacement to the falcon rock.(I still have my falcon rock in a closet) I'm running a 2500+ @ 12.5x168 with an ambient of 78F. Mobo temp is 40C and cpu of 52C under full load running Folding @ Home. (cpu idle's at 44C, but why waste those clock cycles?)
