Safe temp for overclocked 1700+

I have a 1700+ processor with an Epox 8kha+ mobo. I have the processor running at 2.01ghz right now and the processor gets up to a max of about 65 degrees celsius.. I know that's high, but I don't know if that's too high. I've been told that about 70c is when you should worry.

It runs like a champ, even with the pc load at 100% for a day. I have the heatsink for a 2000+ on there, but I don't know if that will be sufficient. It runs at about 58 degrees when it's idle.

Obviously I need a different heatsink, but do you think I should lower the clock speed until I get one? Will I fry anything with the cpu getting to 65 degrees celsius?

Thanks

AMD states it is safe up till about 90C....

Are you using the Retail HSF? Artic Silver 3?

Reseat that HSF...

overclocked and using stock heatsink? thats a no no! you can get by, but remember: every 10 degree drop in temp doubles the life of the cpu. if you plan on upgrading often, you should be fine. else stability problems might arise down the road.

sounds kinda hot, mine runs 42c load. you need an slk800. 50ish with stock cooler would have been acceptable. people don't really keep their cpu's for more then a year or two, atleast overclcokers:) in a year or two its just not worth anything anymore. half of stated 15? year lifespan is dandy.

It's not the stock heatsink..I have a 1700+ and I have the heatsink for a 2000+ on there. 65 degrees will kill the processor? How long do you think it will last like that?

65C is NOT normal. You either have no thermal paste or the heatsink is not seated correctly.

You do have a fan on the heatsink, right?

I think it's pretty normal for a 1700+ running at 2.0ghz to be burning that hot with only a 2000+ heatsink and YES fan on it. Of course I have a fan on it I'm not retarded.

You're not retarded, but many people out there are. That's an OK temp for the stock heatsink, but look into a better heatsink and fan to cool that thing off.

I topped 70C on my 1700+ @ 2.2. :) No hiccups! It may not be a good idea to fold/crunch 24/7 @ those temps, but for occasional use, don't worry about it. If the computer starts to crash, get some better cooling.

Hee Hee, I know a dude who bought a SK-7 and didn't have a clue that you supposed to put a fan on it. He asked me what the stiff wires were for that came with it. I laughed my ass off. He thinks he's a computer guru but he's really a clown that's always good for a laugh. :D

beatle.. 70 c @ 2.2 ghz and it ran fine?.. wow.. Mine doesn't handle anything over 52 at that speed!

In fact it can't handle anything over 60 c @ even at stock speed!

It will do 2420 as long as I keep under 48C and 2533 if I keep under 45.

And peeps.. No need to become hostile.. I was just trying to help out.. I have a friend of mine that has built comps for over 10 years and he still managed to seat his heatsink the wrong way last year or two ago and he almost burned his precious new t-bird. So one doesn't have to be a retard to miss something like that.

I wasn't being hostile, and I apologize if it came off that way. I switched the heatsinks on my two computers, the better computer I don't overclock so there's no need for the copper heatsink. After I installed the good heatsink, it runs at 2.0 at a solid 50c with 100% pc load.

My problem is not knowing the best combination of multiplier/fsb to get the most stable speed. As well as I don't know what to do with the voltage...

can someone help me get it above 2.0??

any settings that work with a decent voltage. if your stepping is lower, it might be maxed at 2ghz

Bah, ;)... I had a 2.4b@3ghz on Retail HSF... (50 C) loaded...

Also. my 1700+@ 2.4ghz runs at about 47C loaded ( Vantec AeroFlow. )

:D

Also Mac, what voltages are you running? ( Vcore )

I really didn't know what to do with the voltages. Obviously I know to increase it, but I didn't know when..and how much. I believe it's at 1.5 now? and I had it up to 1.75 and it didn't help me get any higher. Maybe I don't know what I'm doing.

wait...no maybe about it
