Hi, I've got an old DL360 G2 (dual PIII tualatin, 1.4GHz, 512k).

The fan noise was driving me insane, so i regulated it down to 12v (from 24) and it's.. almost bearable now. At full load it seems to go as high as 55 deg. C.

I figure this should be safe, but.. just looking for second opinion I guess.

According to Intel, the Thermal Spec for all 3 of the 512KB 1.4 Ghz PIIIs is 69 degrees Celsius.

So, you're well under the maximum.

OMG Tualatin! Old school! I think I still have a Tualatin Celeron sitting somewhere in the garage (mobo has burst caps though :disgust: ). 55ºC shouldn't be anywhere near too hot for a load temperature.

Sounds good guys. I think eventually (on a day when i'm feeling less lazy) add a temp sender IC and an opamp & transistor to dynamically control the fan speed.. maybe like 8v at idle and 12-16v at full tilt.

I have no idea what sort of condition they'd need the full hyperdrive 24V for, a server farm in africa?

woohoo, was playing with some low level I2C tools in linux, and I can now change the fan voltage from 14v to 24v in software.

I think i'll try and change the resistors around the opamp to get the range wider.. say 8-24v, and then have a little script to spool it up when she gets warm :)
