Hi

guys I want to overclock a P4 2.8 but dont know whats a safe speed and what cooling to use, could you please advise me since Im new to this

another thing, Im looking at buying a P4C800-E DELUXE and a P4-2.8 with pc3200 ram and thought Id ask your advise on it, any changes you would recommend ?

Thank you

I'd say above 3.0 you want a better solution than retail (unless you lap the HS and use AS3) rather than the thermal pad. A lot of good HSFs out there, I have the Zalman 7000CU and am happy with its performance. I'd say 3.5 max on air. I run 3.4 on a 2.4C, and have a little head room, but any higher requires big increases in VCore that I'm unwilling to commit. These all assume you have a 2.8/memory/MoBo combo that o/c's that well.

Hi

more than comfortable with 3.5 idea :)

by the way whats "lap the HS and use AS3" mean ? sorry new to this
the fan you use, is it a loud one ? Im very affraid of loud ones :) had a 7000rpm vantec once, almost shot myself :)
yes the vcore scares me too, for the 3.5 idea would I still have to do it ?

well the mobo Im looking at is considered good for OC, actually the top 3 overclocking records are achieved using this board :)
check out son.t-next.com/wcpuid/wcpuid.html

but about the memory Im unsure, I was looking at crucial pc3200, what do you think ?

Thank you
Dan

3.47 here with stock cooling. Well a little AS3 on stock heatsink/fan.
I would recommend a higher memory speed. 3500 maybe.

LN2=Liquid nitrogen. Lapping means sanding the surface to get better contact.

EDIT: To get 3.6GHz, you need 257FSB. A more reasonable 3.4 would imply 242FSB. On a 5:4 ratio, if you could reach 3.6 that'd mean you'd need to have memory capable of 410MHz (205DDR). The 3200 would serve well for that. At 3.4GHz you'd be actually running slower than spec (194DDR) for PC3200.

wow, that sounds good, but in that case at stock speed that means the ram is generally slow as hell ? by the way I plan to use it in dual channel (in case there is a difference if I do that)

Thank you

I replied to your other thread on this. You do NOT need special cooling to hit 3.5gig. The retail HSF's are not like the older AMD solutions where you would hve to get a new one just so the thing would run smoothly w/o shutting down. The 3.0-3.2gig HSF has a copper core and that even makes them better. I have 3 of the 2.4C's and all are above 3gig with stock cooling. 2 are at 3.4gig.

As far as memory, if you are on a budget get the PC3200 and run 5:4 if not get some good PC3700 like the OCZ PC3700 or PC4000 Gold series and you will be able to run 1:1. To be 100% sure they will work togther at the same speeds and timing get a matched set or "Dual channel" kit.

Hi

well Im looking for the best HSF so that I'll have overhead :) just in case I have crazy ideas :)

about the ram, well I am a bit on budget + I dont like the idea of spending more on 512mbs than on 1gb of good ol crucial
here is a question, would 512mb of the most expensive ram out there improve the overal performance of the machine more than a GB of crucial ?
by the way what do you mean by 5:4 and 1:1 ??

Thank you
Dan

1:1 and 5:4 are ratios. If the FSB is at 200mhz with a 1:1 ratio than the cpu and ram are both at 200mhz. Now if you were to set the ratio to 5:4 the cpu would be 200 and the ram would be 160.

If you are not doing heavy graphics design then I don't believe you need more than 512. I also think that in a year we may need the 1gig but by then there will be DDR2 and maybe even something different.

Hi

you mean while overclocking the CPUs FSB to lets say 220 the ram wont hold at 1:1 ?
I see your point here, well lets say I do brake the bank and get pc3500, should I brake it even more and get a matched pair ? the prices do seem quite high on those

I might not need 1gb, but I always love having the overhead, I was going to get 2gb origianally but my bank wont hold :(
plus I do believe I was able to max out a 512 and I dont like when the PC feeds off the HDD because it dont have enough ram

Thank you
Dan
