safe mode with networking, no network

I'm trying to boot into safe mode with networking on Win XP Pro. The machine boots fine, but I cannot access the internet. I've tried both through the router and directly to the cable modem, but for some reason windows is not seeing the connection and network card.

I'm using the Nvidia built-in networking on the Asus A8N-SLI mobo. I've rebooted the PC and the cable modem, router, etc. several times to no avail. According to the device manager the network card is functioning properly, but when I look at the "network connections" in the control panel there are no connections listed nor will it add a new one. Trying to add a new connection gives a message something like "your broadband connection is already setup"

Any suggestions for a next step in diagnosing this issue?
