When in safe mode I have 2 black bars that run horizontally accross my monitor....1 at the top & 1 at the bottom. Anyone know why this would be? TIA!

Safe mode doesn't run at your normal resolution. 640x480 or 800x600 I think it uses.

LCD: your native resolution is 1024x768 or higher

CRT: safe mode is using a different resolution and refresh rate, which means you need to use your monitor controls to adjust the picture (most CRTs store different picture settings for different resolutions)

Its an LCD, 17" and I usually use 1024 x 768 but that gave me the bars so I moved down with now luck.

edit: i just realized whenever I turn on my comp I get a brief "out of range" warning at start up with vert & hor #s...but need to find out what it is & how to fix.

Then your resolution is probably 1280x1024, RTFM to find out. AFAIK most/all 17" are 1280x1024.

17" native resolution should be 1280x1024 anything else will either give you black bars or a stretched image.

I set it to 1280x1024...same bars. I did write down the warning it was giving me:

Out of Range

H. Freq 35kHRz

V. Freq 85.8 HRz

Would this be the cause?

You might have the monitor type in Windows set to CRT, and/or the refresh rate set way too high (your manual will tel you the proper refresh, probably under 80Hz.)
