Safe limit for gear changes?

This is for an Accord 4 cyl. 91 LX. What's a safe limit for rpm changes? It has 160k miles approaching 170k I believe, but somewhere between those two.

I said limit, not when I should shift, obviously limit is above 3000 rpm. I shift around 2500 rpm in normal driving.
 
Check your manual - it should give you ideal shift points for acceleration/cruising. Or do you mean the upper limit? If so, that's really all up to you and how long you plan to keep the car. The upper limit is really redline because you'll hit fuel cutoff if you try to go any higher. As far as the _safe_ limit? Somewhere between the ideal point given in the manual and redline, erring towards the manual's guidelines.

Oh, and I hope to keep this car for AT LEAST 4 more years, more if possible so brother can practice learning to drive on it too.

What he said. Not to be rude, but it's not a friggin science. Shift below the redline, how far under it is really up to you, I'd anywhere between 2700-redline. Just listen to the engine and shift when it sounds right.

On a car that old with that many miles... I think you'd be able to tell when you're reving too high, just by the sounds it will be making.

When all you hear is the engine making noise but you're not going anywhere quick, it's time to shift 😉 Diminishing returns of change in speed as you revv more and more.
