hey guys,

originally I was targeting the south bay area near silicon valley but it looks like my weekly commute to SFO will be difficult. Can anyone recommend safe and inexpensive cities where I should look into? It looks like the drive from places like Mountain View to the Milabrae bart station into SFO is like an hour one way.

Thanks

Mountain View wouldn't be bad and isn't too expensive (relative to other places north of Mountain View like Palo Alto and Menlo Park. You could take Cal Train from the Mountain View station to the Millbrae station and get on BART there. I don't think that takes too long and it's pretty easy.

If you need somewhere close to BART there are plenty of places. Near the Pittsburg/Bay Point line, you've got Concord, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek. Then there's Dublin/Pleasanton on that line. If you want to be closer to the South Bay, but close to BART you can try Fremont.

I grew up mostly in Fremont/Newark (after living in San Jose for my first 8 years :) ), and did a lot of commuting from Fremont to San Jose when I lived there. It's not too bad, but it depends how far your commute into San Jose is.

If you are more specific about what it is you will be doing, and what you want, you'll get better recommendations. Do you really want to ride BART? Can you just use long term parking? Want quiet?

Without more, I'd just say look at a map, then use close-by city names to search for apartments on craigslist. Pacifica, Millbrae, San Mateo, Belmont, etc. There aren't many rough areas on the peninsula.
