Ok.. hands down.... the one song that can now make me cry on command..

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere over the Rainbow.

It's the version sung on ER when Dr Greene passed away..

it also appears on Finding Forrester, and 50 First Dates.

That is a happy song (Over the Rainbow).

Alice in Chains - Nutshell is probably the saddest song I've ever heard.

Not the sadest on the planet but:

Derek and the Dominoes - Bell Bottom Blues

Bell bottom blues, you made me cry.
I don't want to lose this feeling.
And if I could choose a place to die
It would be in your arms.

Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?
Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?
I'd gladly do it because
I don't want to fade away.
Give me one more day, please.
I don't want to fade away.
In your heart I want to stay.

It's all wrong, but it's all right.
The way that you treat me baby.
Once I was strong but I lost the fight.
You won't find a better loser.

Chorus

Chorus

Bell bottom blues, don't say goodbye.
I'm sure we're gonna meet again,
And if we do, don't you be surprised
If you find me with another lover.

Chorus

I don't want to fade away.
Give me one more day please.
I don't want to fade away.
In your heart I long to stay.

It's not the saddest on the planet because it's a pretty uptempo song, but Radiohead's Thinking About You is kinda sad.

Also, The Who's Real Good Looking Boy.

Last Kiss? Too cheesy for a truly sad song. It's got a good premise but doesn't quite pull it off, at least not in the original or any covers thus far.

I would have to agree on that. If someone does a truly good cover, rewrites some of it, etc etc it would be 'sadder'

I hear Evaporated is a really sad song too by them. It's a response to a Radiohead song or something, I forget which song or even where I heard that.

Adagio for Strings - Samuel Barber

If you listen to the whole thing is the easiest song to cry to hands down with no lyrics necessary.

A very distant second in my books is Sarah McLachlan's "Angel".

Edit: I actually find Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere over the Rainbow to be positive for me. Weird. I feel happy when listening to it (not neutral, happy).

Now it may not be the saddest song but this is very subjective anyways. :p

With that said, I would say The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald. Based on a true story. Gordon Lightfoot's version is ok but this version is kickass. Gives me goosebumps following along the lyrics.

We joke about bad weather at sea and when the skies darken and the wind comes up make the comment "bring it on, bitch!". Well all that is meaningless when listening to this song. Jokes aside, you don't mess with Mother Nature!

For those too young to recall look it up!

p.s. This definitely needs mention in the original vs. cover thread.

Holy h3ll. During the 2 movies I saw with that song [Platoon and Lorenzo's Oil] I nearly lost it. I did loose it during the game Homeworld when it played though :p

You don't get the full emotion in Platoon that you will find if you listen to the complete thing on a nice loud system with the lights down low :p
