Sad fact about the state of computing

I have a system at home, Athlon XP1700+, GeForceFX 5950 Ultra, 640MB RAM, etc. The motherboard's IDE is jacked up to the point that it kills HDs. And I can't justify spending $50 to get another board, so it sits collecting dust to the side. There was a time this would be a killer gaming rig.

I have a SuperMicro P4DL6 with dual 2.2 Xeons and 2 GB of RAM sitting here next to me, and I can't justify buying a case, PSU, and HDD to utilize it.

Darn. Judging by the title I was hoping for a deep, introspective thought.

Maybe even Jack Handy-style.

I think that says little about the state of computing. That would still be a completely capable machine, for many applications. I'm sure it'll run Firefox, business applications, coding applications, etc just fine. Games will - for the conceivable future - push the limits of machines, but have little bearing on much else.

you can get a socket A mobo in FS/T for half that

otherwise, part it out in fs/t yourself :)

Yup. Get a cheap used board in AT FS/FT. That's what I would do when I need old replacement parts. The resulting machine would still be quite capable. Heck, my primary machine is a Duron 950, Nvidia TNT2, 512MB RAM. It's still capable of word processing, web surfing, coding, video viewing and encoding, etc. The only thing it can't do is games, which I don't play anyway. Of course, I'm pushing the limits of this system.

I have an A64 2800+ system and an X2 3800+, even if I did ressurect the system, it'd sit dormant like the 500K6-2 that has been perfectly functional with a clean install in the top of my closet.

Sad fact about the state of Demon-Xanth's apathy and laziness (tfinch's too!) would have been a more appropriate title to this thread. ;)

Agreed ...

$20 or maybe even less for a cheapo PCI IDE card.
Or part it out on FS/FT ....

No sense in "wasting" the hardware by not using it ...

I've found uses for ALL of my hardware ....
Barton 2500 HTPC
Celeron 1.8ghz Server
Celeron 700 firewall/Nat
P3 450 lappy websurfing / portable DVD player / SSH terminal
and a couple of slightly newer rigs...

I've also given my old (yet fully working) systems to family who otherwise would not have a computer, or as upgrades to their ancient hardware...

My mom now has an Athlon 1500 rather than no computer, my cousin a barton 2500 rather than a celeron 533 ....

I'm sure you can find a use to bring that old machine back to life, otherwise sell the parts .. and get back some of the money you spent on the hardware.

I keep PCI ATA cards in the closet for this very reason. My main machine has a mobo that does the exact same thing....kills HDs. I now have only CD/DVD players hooked up to the onboard IDE channels and all the HDs go to PCI ATA cards. Now I have no more problems and the mobo is still usable.

It's been a while since I sold off my XP 1800+. Can't even remember who I ended up selling it to, I think a buddy of mine or something. I might've just sold the board/cpu/memory on ebay or something like that, when I upgraded to my P4 a few years ago. Now I've got my C2D and 7950GT though, so I'm happy.

Still, I loved that Athlon, very nice chip, ran kinda hot but did what I needed it to for a few years.
