The designer of the original Mazda Miata has put down his pen and will teach design, AutoWeek magazine reports. Tom Matano, 54, is leaving Mazda to become the director of industrial design at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. Matano has been the head of Mazda design in Japan for the past four years, the magazine says, but a recent restructuring at the company left his position redundant. Mazda has said Moray Callum ? brother of Jaguar designer Ian Callum ? will be its new design director. Matano joined Mazda in 1983; the Miata joined the Mazda lineup in 1989 and some 600,000 roadsters have been built.
Darn! BMW should have hired him to replace Bangle!
