Sad day for me today

3 weeks ago my gf and I went to a humane society in the town where we went to school. We wanted to adopt a cat for our other cat that was having to spend a lot more time alone than usual because of our schedules. We went there and decided to adopt the cat that was next to be put down. We found this 1 year old female cat that was just extremely loving. I can't imagine why no one wanted her.

Well we got her she had a runny nose. So, we immediately took her to the vet and they saw she had an upper respitory infection and lucky they told us to keep her sepearted from the other animals for 2 weeks. So I took her to my apartment (I live and work in another city). She would get better than get sick with something else. So i took her back to my vet and they ran some tests on her and discovered she has FIV which is like HIV in humans.

Thus, I am putting her down today at 5. Even though its only been 3 weeks im so attached that this is hard thing for me to do but everyone says its better to do it now than when she is really sick. I hope this is the right decision.

RIP Chloe.

You're putting her down because of a runny nose? Why not wait until she's actually remotely suffering?

Then again, when it gets ugly it gets real ugly. I've brought home two kittens who died within days from respiratory problems. Not sure exactly what they had but it was a really pathetic end.

Good luck with that.

Man, that sucks really bad, especially considering the humane society is SUPPOSED to test for that BEFORE putting uo a cat for adoption. It's law if I'm not mistaken, and standard practice at all humane society centers I've known.

I'd call them on this too.

Sorry to hear.

We had to put down our cat of 14 years because of cancer, and then shortly after, we adopted a 2 month old kitten. The kitten had a respiratory infection as well...runny nose, sneezing, and all that kind of stuff. She got my other cat sick as well, but after a few days everything was fine.

Another cat that I had a few years ago had FIV as well. He became blind, and with some shots his vision would be back (you could tell by his reaction). In the end, it costed too much for the treatment, so we put him down (but he was about 12-13 years old at the time, so he was a pretty old cat). I think you're making the right decision, it saves you some of the trauma when youu get really attached to her in a few years then you have to put her down. It's easier for you to do now, and she doesn't have to go through all the complications of FIV

Well she has some kind of worm in her intestinal tract now. Everyone I talk to say that it is the right thing to do because we have other cats and because 1. I will be much more attached to her if i wait longer and 2. to not let her suffer.

I wanted to keep her but my vet and others suggest this is the best route for her. What really pisses me off is that the humane society is not required to test for this virus. And then when I called the guy was like well bring her in and exchange her for another. Im sorry but i am not that ruthless to my animals. Not that it is but i have grown attached already and that would just be wrong for me to do that to her i think.

Trust me I don't want to put her down at all. I would even pay the medical bills but everyone is worried about her being sick all the time and my other animals catching it.

Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of AIDS. I mean, I'm just sayin'...

Sorry for your loss, OP. I'd call the Humane Society and give them some serious grief, including your vet's test results and demand a replacement cat at no charge.

FIV = Feline immunodeficiency virus. I would think it would be a law to test for it but the guy said that they dont' have enough money to test every cat that came through there. So I asked if we were to adopt another would they provide the test or pay to have the test done. He said no.

They offered a replacement cat but I so far have declined. My gf just adopted another cat for her and she does not want to deal with that humane society again. Compared to the ones where I live, this place wasn't nice at all. I just think that it is unfortuante that they are not required by law to test for that virus.
