Just got an email from my boss,

She went in for a routine procedure, a serious complication arose unexpectedly and the medical team was unable to stabilize her.

Its a sad day in the office. I hear this a lot, routine procedure for others might not be so routine to you.. these things are always so unexpected. Minor surgery are never minor.

I believe she was recently divorced and had 2 young kids under 10.

Same here. Coworker's husband (who's also a coworker) succumbed to a brain tumor on Monday. They both sit right next to me :(

A distant relative contracted MRSA while tending to a bruised hip in the hospital, and after stabilizing him for a few days, died a week later. Isn't modern medicine wonderful?

I think there's a big disconnect between what the public is led to perceive as routine, and the actual risks of any procedure where you undergo general anesthesia. I'm sorry to hear about your coworker.

Sorry to hear, that sucks.

I had 2 people on my project pass away unexpectedly a year back.

Enjoy each and EVERY day while you are here, tomorrow you might not come (although 99.99999% that tomorrow WILL be here).

Actually, minor surgery, is minor. Millions of people each year undergo minor surgery, and for the vast majority, it's perfectly safe. There is exceptions to everything though, and that is unfortunately how life works.

most people don't think about dying when they jump in the car everyday either, but the rate is worse than the one relative to medical complications deaths, I believe.

Nobody I knew ever died except for grandparents so I don't know that feel.

Too many 9s in there my friend. Even if you live to 80 that's only 29220 days. 99.99658%

Condolences to the family. My co-worker had breathing issues so went in for some surgery, developed scar tissue in her throat. Her options were, try surgery again with a chance for death or get a tracheotomy. She decided not to risk surgery again.

I had a sad thing happen to me 2 years ago when i started my job. I cam in for my interview and the HR lady was pregnant and almost ready to burst. I got the job and started a couple weeks later. When i started i was being taken care of by a different HR person and it was explained that she died while giving birth. The baby survived at least but it kind of put my in a funk the rest of the day knowing that this person died and that the kid would grow up without a mother.

I've had 2 die. One was an older guy with several health problems and one day he just didn't show up anymore. Other was one that decided to step in front of incoming traffic.
