Ladies, ladies, ladies. It's just a freaking transmission.
In real-world conditions it really might not be all that different.
Pick what you want/like.

BTW, in general, towing is better done with an automatic. I wish I could find the Car Talk article I read about that years ago, but my search came up empty. Why are tractor-trailers manual? Hell if I know. Maybe it's just too expensive to make an automatic transmission with 20-some gears?

automatics suck

As do you.

There's no way driving an automatic is as much fun as shifting to 3rd, slamming the rpm past 5k. I had an automatic in my 52, but it was great cause it refused to shift back to 2nd, unless you kicked in the 4barrell.....wooohooo! The good ol 10-12mpg days!

You don't drag race. I do.

Point?

What was yours? Mine was(like Skoorb explained in the beginning) that each transmission has its better traits. In drag racing the automatics rule over manuals.

Well, "You don't drag race. I do" was a pretty effective way of expressing that point and I'm sure will be handy info for the average car buyer.

Because the average car buyer isn't someone who wants to drink coffee while driving or apply make up. Right? They also love shifting in traffic too don't they?

Drinking coffee and shifting in traffic is no problem...I would love to hear about your personal experiences with the makeup though.

You don't drag race. I do.

And you know if I drag race because? Besides REAL men race around curves too, nut just straightaways.

Yes autos are prime for the local dragstip I frequent

Real Men don't race on the street but that I am guily of myself. Also you never made any mention of why you thought manual was better. You simply just made a blanket statement. I had to assume you were ignorant and I was pretty right about that.

Do you auto-x?

1. Manual is obviously better for pulling which I mentioned earlier....If not then why do 18wheelers use manual?
2. ASSume is right there bub
3. Me ignorant? We're all ignorant in our own ways about certian things. eg. I'm ignorant in the Taiwanese language. Did mrs. Cleo tell you that I was ignorant...

an 18 wheeler being manual has nothing to do with towing strength or capacity

You said the average driver and I gave you an average driver situation. I don't even drink coffee and the only personal experience I have had with makeup is when your mom's makeup rubbed off...

Not a subscriber, tell that to Semi-Truck drivers who have driven an auto vs manual

Okay, you guys need to stop quoting the entire thread up until your posts.

I think geno put it very well - I prefer stick because I find it vastly more satisfying to drive. I have owned two cars with autos and four with manuals, and I sincerely can't imagine I will ever own another automatic (until I am an old, old man). I do not drag race, nor do I race autocross. I am not really interested in the objective, quantitative pros and cons of manuals and automatics. I just enjoy driving, and I find it ultimately dull (or at least duller) driving an automatic. I have never found it a hardship driving a stick in traffic, not even when I lived in San Francisco, where a stick creates additional challenges. On balance, that article is about as meaty and substantive as something in "Highlights" magazine.

What I care about is the fun of driving a manual transmission. It's quite satisfying to go through those gears accelerating out of the toll booth. Also on a domestic subcompact like mine that manual transmission gets the most out of my engine.
Also, I may be wrong on this though, I think a new clutch costs a heck of a lot less than a new automatic transmission.

Mind you where I live, rush hour is a few extra cars at the lights. If I lived in a big, traffic jammed city like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, or the likes I would NEVER buy a manual transmission. Stop and go traffic is hell in a clutch. With a manual transmission, I would not want to sit in traffic 5 days a week crawling 5 feet, stopping, and repeat for several miles.

People who buy a manual transmission are people who like it. Saving $800 or $900 doesn't hurt either. As for resale value, I plan to drive this car into the ground. The car will be worth nothing. I'll have to pay the tow truck to haul it off to the salvage yard. Heh I can see the conversation...

Dealer: Your car needs $1500 in repairs. I'm not sure it's worth it as your car has a blue book value of $500.
Me: Oh well I'll call the tow truck to haul it off to a salvage yard or to be crushed. Tell me about that 2 year old used car with 18,000 miles on it... :D

My M5 stays garaged 6 days a week. Sure its fun but commuting in that thing is a nightmare even though it is the friendliest manual I've ever had. Still, the stop and go traffic of Boston especially along the "Central Artery" and 93/95 split is not worth it. Sure I'd drive the M5 everyday is I had nothing better to do but I save my sanity (as well as left leg) and go with the 4.6is. Lots of power on tap by just slamming the accelrator to kickdown.

As for trucks, more and more are getting sequential "manumatics" when city driving is its the main use. Dad got rid of every manual in his company for automatics five years ago and his drivers couldn't be happier.
