Sacred 2, how close to Diablo is it?

So, ever since I played through Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, I've had an itch to play a Diablo-style hack n slash.

I was originally looking at Torchlight, and was going to download the demo off steam, when Sacred 2 caught my attention on the specials page (50% off, $10).

I hadn't looked at the Sacred series before, so wondering, what's everyone thoughts on it? Will I need to play through Sacred 1 to appreciate the story (I really dislike jumping into the middle of a series)? How long is the game; how good is the replay value? Is the game primary focused on singleplayer or multiplayer?

As far as the basics, dead on. It's straight hack'n'slash. Everything else is entirely different. No real level cap, more difficulty levels, items scale... Because of the lack of level cap, the skill system is entirely unique. Mostly open world, lots of side quests. Fairly unique classes, LOTS of items.

I thought the gameplay was much slower than D2. Torchlight and Titan Quest are more similar to D2.

I thought Sacred 2 kind of sucked - really convoluted when it really didn't need to be. They made it much more streamlined and, IMO, better on the console than on the PC.

idk, maybe it was because I love summoner archtypes and the one sucked in this game lol

I bought the Sacred 2 on a Steam sale and tried to start playing it. I just could not get into the game for some reason.
I dont really know what the problem was, the game just seemed "off" somehow. Like something was missng. I know for one thing that I wish the camera could be zoomed out more, but other than that, no major problems. Just could not get into the game.

I bought Dragon Knight Saga at about the same time, and have played through it twice and have barely played Divinity 2. So that tells you something. I would recommend Dragon Knight Saga, but be sure to get the enhaced version with the expansion. The ending to the first game was terrible, and was clearly meant as a lead-in to the expansion.
It is more of a quest oriented game than a hack and slash, but I enjoyed it.

You reached the end of the open world, I guess? Idk.

I don't think so? i mean my quest objective was on the other side of the... gray area... plus its like a minute out from the starting town =X

I didn't like it. Technically very good but just lacked something. I gave up after a few hours.

Sacred 2 is nothing like Diablo. It was a horribad game. Epic fail in multiple ways. Don't bother with it. You are better off trying Sacred 1 and it's expansion. That was actually a pretty good game if not for the constant, excessive monster respawns.

Pity you bought it, Torchlight is WAY better. And torchlight 2 is coming soon.

Sacred 2 is just not Diablo. Its more... MMOey than Diablo. Diablo is fast paced action, Sacred 2 is a slow paced walk in the countryside.

Well, I finally think I got all the bugs figured out, and have had a chance to play with it for quite a bit this weekend.

The game doesn't seem that bad once all the bugs are sorted out. It definitely a slower-pace game, combat wise, than diablo 2, but doesn't seem that bad, as I can always find a click fest a few screens out of town. It feels like World of Warcraft for Diablo tbh; not that theres anything wrong with that. The game did its job of satisfying my itch to play a diablo-style hack n slash, so no complains there

What is going to annoy me is my char tho; I made a sera thinking of playing it like the standard sword n board paladin class (the class I usually start out with in a new game). Then half way through I realized how ridiculously overpowered the BFG was, and I just can't justify using a sword/shield combo over it. So now I have a level 30 sera with half of her skills useless, and I can't decide if I want to start a new char with a proper BFG build or just keep going with this :(
