[Updated 12:17 p.m.] Seven Amtrak workers were treated for minor injuries Friday after two trains collided in downtown Sacramento.
Sacramento City Fire Department officials responded to the accident at 2:24 a.m. at the Amtrak station at 401 I St. The first arriving fire company found both trains upright, but the Amtrak train having six of its nine cars partially or fully derailed.
The Amtrak train had eight employees on board and the Union Pacific Train had two. Seven Amtrak workers were treated for minor injuries. No passengers were on the train at the time.
The Union Pacific freight train was on its way from Roseville to Warm Springs, a town just north of San Jose, said John Bromley, Union Pacific spokesman.
Amtrak's Capitol Corridor service, which runs from the Bay Area to Sacramento, was rerouted with minor delays. Union Pacific, which owns the track, expected to have the accident cleared by Friday evening, Bromley said.
The Amtrak train was not moving at the time and the derailment caused some minor damage to the boarding area of the train depot. The freight train was carrying a mixed load of cargo in 46 train cars and suffered little or no damage to the cargo. Union Pacific and Amtrak officials are investigating the incident.
