im pretty sure SACD's are cd's in surround sound, is this right?
do they play in regular computer DVD/CD-ROM drives or do i need a special drive/codec?
are there any programs that can rip to a format which preserves its SACD qualities?

SACD use a completely different recording and playback method and will not play in anything but a SACD player. Some discs are hybrids which contain a second layer with a standard CD audio version of the same album which will play in any CD player. Of course, you will not be getting the high fidelity version then. You cannot play them on a PC, and though you can copy the discs to another disc, you cannot rip them and listen/re-encode them onto your HD.
