If a regular DVD player has no issue with playing DD5.1 and DTS soundtracks that are 5 channel, how come I need an SACD or DVD-A player to play 5 channel music?

because it's a different format and much higher resolution.

dd and dts are normally 5.1 surround mixes so if you want non hi-resolution music just use that. But it wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up a player that supports SACD and DVD-a

If Bluray discs are out, why do we need HD-DVD? I dunno, because industry != common standards. btw, I have a DVD/DVD-Audio/SACD player for sale for cheap in my thread, see sig ;)

I'm sure the actual laser can read the discs but won't recognize it because there's no proper decoder to decode the data from the disc. Most dvd players today support both sacd and dvd-a.

I understand that one of the big problems with sacd/dvd-a is the bass management.

I wasn't overly impressed with SACDs personally, but there was a noticeable difference in DVD-Audio discs, mainly becaues of the surround-sound. It felt more like you were sitting in the mixing room or at the concert. If it makes any difference to you, I only bought 1 disc of each format and haven't purchased any since :p

SACD or DVD-A formats do not have an issue with bass management... however, many players do have issues with bass management or some don't have bass management which is just as bad.
