S939 Upgrade!

Hey all!

My little brother is currently running some old school single core A64 3000+ CPU (or something along those lines) and is looking for a quick S939 upgrade. I was browsing the Egg, and I came across:

X2 3800+ Toledo @ $64
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103052

and

X2 4200+ Manchester @ $74
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103543

Now I fully intend to overclock whichever of these CPUs he ends up buying as far as they'll allow me to help stretch his current system out for a couple more months. So my question is, which of these is the better core for overclocking? Does it matter at all? Any input you guys could give me would be great.

Well, the last AMD chip I owned was an A64-3200+ (-> E6400) so I really haven't followed the OC potential of the X2 chips.

One thing though, make sure his motherboard will support an X2 chip before you spend the money (not all of them will, especially if it's from the early days of S939). If it won't, a possibility is the ASRock 4CoreDual-Sata2 motherboard ($66 @ Newegg) that will let you run a cheap e2140/e2160 and reuse your ram/video card/etc.

Already checked all of that out. His Asus mobo will take X2 / Opty CPUs without a hitch.

His Xmas present from me was just going to be a 8800GT, but I decided to throw in a cheap CPU upgrade as well just to help things along until he can splurge on a whole new CPU/MOBO/RAM setup.

Toledo's overclock better. So since you're overclocking, go with that one, save yourself the 10$ and you should be able to get 2.6ghz out of it, perhaps more with some luck ... That should keep him happy for some time.

I agree the 3800+ toledo is the way to go as long as you know the motherboard can do higher FSB with no problem. If your FSB limited the 4200+ is well worth the extra $10 bucks for the 11x multi

As usual the overclocking varies by chip, I happen to have a 3800+ in my wifes rig and a 4200+ in my sons rig. In my case they are both manchester cores and the 4200+ clocks a little better 2.65 vs 2.55, but the rig with the 4200+ has a better overclocking mobo.

Thanks for the advice guys. Went and ordered the 3800+, hopefully we pull in a decent chip that can get to 2.4-2.6 without much trouble.

Have you guys got any opinions on decent HSFs that aren't going to cost me as much as the CPU itself? I run Zalman 9700's in both of my current rigs, and the idea of paying $60 for a HSF to put on a $64 CPU has kind of got me scratching my head, lol.

Haha, you could get the TX2 for 2$ after rebates someplace, but erm, first best guess I can think of is the arctic freezer 7 pro, which offers good performance for little money. That's what I did, and it's running at 2.6ghz just fine.

Good luck. I had a Manchester X2 3800+ that overclocked well, but for some reason my motherboard didn't. The CPU would be nice and stable, not too hot, and then all of a sudden the system would just totally shut off... don't ask me why. It would happen at idle or load, but only when overclocked. *shrug*

A lot of ppl have luck with getting that chip to 2.6 or so, and if you can it will be a happy partner with the 8800gt.

Got an X2 3800+ up to 2.65Ghz here, no problem. Temps got kind of crazy though, 83C on the hottest core, with the stock aluminum block AMD heatsink. Definately drop the cash on an aftermarket heatsink, NewEgg has the Freezer Pro 64 for $20 FS.

yeah, freezer pro 64 and toledo is the way to go. I had a zalman that I bought in my noob days and transferred from my old fx55 to an opty 180, but if I had it to do over again I would have gotten a slower one and then oc'd ftw!
