Need to put together a cheap server and want to use a single opteron 148. looking at newegg, i can't find any boards that have opterons listed as supported, but in the reviews of one of the opterons, it shows it being used on an nforce board. i don't want to get this and it not work on a board.

It is technically the same chip as the A64 3700 San Diego. It will/should work on most if not all NF4 boards w/latest BIOS. Getting support from the MB manufacturer is another story altogether. Lots of people using DFI NF4 with optys for big OC's, but DFI will absolutely not support it. There are a few manufacturers that do support them though. Just have to look.

think i'd be better off just getting an athlon64 for it and calling it a day? the server isn't going to be getting pounded or anything.

Plenty of people are using Opty/NF4 combos. Just look at peoples rigs and judge for yourself. I myself have the 148 in a box waiting on a DFI expert board.

Hell, I game on my Opty.

Opty 175+Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe Mobo+2 7800GT's in SLI= 1 Kickass gaming setup.

Not to mention it OC's rather well (at FX-60 speeds at stock Voltages STABLE)
