S6 battery life gets worse with every update

So I'm at 12% right now after less than 11 hours since I unplugged it. In that time, I've spent 2.5 hours in a movie and 3 hours playing Magic. Battery says "cell standby" is the biggest ah heck at 11%.

I've never even had to care about this stuff before - does cell standby usually use that much battery? Firefox is next at 10%, which I can understand since that's all I've done with my phone today except for a few texts and emails.

This S6...fucking hate the battery life. I don't care how good the phone is if I have to even think about it making it through the rest of the day. The last update from AT&T made it worse, noticeably within the first day.

Did you go someplace you don't usually? My battery drain related issues are due to weak signal 90% of the time. You do have ATT after all

I sometimes wish the U.S. Congress reined on the carriers meddling with smartphones so that carriers cannot change anything other than what is absolutely necessary for their network services. A popular phone like the S6 suffers the worst when it comes to parasitic behaviors by the carriers.

Then again, the U.S. government itself relies on carriers to spy on its citizens - and from what I can tell the citizenry seem to have largely acquiesced in it as a way of life..

Not all is lost, though, and the end of contract pricing could change consumers' perspectives and expectations. Once consumers realize that they are paying full prices for the devices, they will become more sensitive to what is essentially a rent-seeking behavior by the carriers. Hopefully we become more sensitive to the government surveillance as well but for that I am less optimistic.

AT&T is pretty solid around where I live and I didn't go more than 5 miles from my house.

I hear disabling the enhanced lte option in settings helps. You shouldn't have to but give it a shot.

The first 2 days I had my Note 5, cell standby was also like 12%. But it just stopped and since hasn't shown up again for me on att.

Disabling location services helps a little. Each update probably does reduce battery because the more apps you have running the shorter the battery life.

yeah unless you are regularly having phone sex with someone else using a VoLTE device you wont even notice. Might as well turn it off because it seems to be using a LOT of battery in standby.

actually people on xda are getting the opposite experience. Update gets better battery life.

Is VoLTE compatible between carriers? I realize that since I usually just call my wife I have no idea. We're on VZW.

I think it depends, for the moment I would just assume that no it probably wont work between two different carriers (especially at&t and verizon). Though if it was two CDMA carriers or two GSM carriers your luck might be better.

But in any case both phones must be in VoLTE coverage area, and both phones must support VoLTE, I have heard that it is SUPPOSED to be interoperable, but since it isn't fully implemented in this country I wouldn't expect it to work.

I think so. The contact list in my T-Mobile G4 has a bunch of contacts tagged with "HD Calling" that I know are on Verizon. Somehow it knows who is on that service as many of them I've never called since getting the phone.

Hmmm, k. I don't make many phone calls so I'll try turning it off. Shouldn't have to.

This is the infamous "mobile radio active" bug that has totally fucked all Android battery life since 5.0. It's not the carrier's fault, or Samsung's. Just Google.

The bugtracker claims it will be fixed in 6.0. I don't know.

If I had a device on 4.4.4, I'd leave it there.

Yep, that was one of the reasons I downgraded my OnePlus One to 4.4.4. 5.x is turning into a real "Vista moment" for Google. It's unbelievable that they don't give this bug the highest priority.
