EDIT - Factory reset did nothing

Went to sleep last night with the phone acting as an alarm and plugged in next to the bed.
Woke up late as the alarm didn't go off and phone was locked up. Pulled battery and I noticed an unlocked padlock with the word "Custom" that I have never seen before. Phone hangs at the Verizon splash screen each time.
Phone has never been rooted. Probably has whatever was the latest update that Verizon pushed.
When booting to Recovery, the Android robot is dead with "No Command" under his prone body.
What's going on?

You could try a hard reset but you might lose data.

No root or mods? I would take it to the store then.

Wiped the cache partition with no change.
Trying to avoid a reset but that may not be an option.

Never been rooted, factory reset didn't help.
Going to Verizon after work.

I'm always surprised at how many people use their phone as their only alarm clock. Given how fickle they are I still have a dedicated alarm clock.

Anyway, I highly doubt it's related but AT&T had to pull their 4.4 update on the Galaxy S4 Active because it was bricking phones. Gobs of people applied the update only for their touchscreen to be non functioning, and some people even reporting overheating and burned in images on their screen (which doesn't even sound possible, but w/e). I wonder if there's an underlying issue with some of the updates regardless of carrier.

I unplugged my alarm clock. Three nights ago I awoke and could hear electrical "sizzling" emanating from it.

That's bad. You should check to make sure your gfci and circuit breaker are working. I'll be upset if we end up down an oldsmoboat because of an alarm clock.

Phone is toast. Should get another one in the mail tomorrow.
Better plug the alarm clock back in and bring in a fire extinguisher.

I assume you charge your phone on the same circuit as your alarm clock. Two things fry within a week? Seriously... Don't plug anything else into that room until you get it checked out.

LOL, good point. Alarm clock works, it's just sizzling...
