S2000 tows a boat

Probably a repost, but it's the first time I've seen it so I wanted to share for those who haven't seen this yet.

It wouldn't be my first choice, but God knows in other parts of the world people routinely tow things with cars less powerful than an S2000, with manual transmissions. I still don't really see the point in doing this rather than just buying a cheap used pickup, but to each his own . . .

He swapped out the gearing for more torque. The gearing of an S2k was already geared for acceleration so I wonder how much worse his top-end is now.

His previous top speed was a drag limited 155, but his gearing would allow for 165mph.

iirc he put in 4.77 gears, which would take his top speed down to 142mph. Besides forced induction, gears are the best bang for the buck mod on S2000s, especially the AP1s.

AP2 > Ap1

but anyways with S2000's really the best years to get are the even numbered ones since every 2 years it got an upgrade

2000 - intro

2002 - glass window, more interior goodies, suspension tweaks

2004 - 2.2L more torque but 8k redline, whole new suspension, stronger diff, bigger and wider wheels, more interior tweaks, burns less oil and with the new bumpers it is more aerodynamic and better mpg

2006 - Drive by wire, traction control, ecu is tunable with Hondata and various other programs, dynos report higher horsepower

2008 - more suspension tweaks, and the CR model was available

2010 - Dead, car won't be sold anymore, and no replacement

Hope I never see that dumb SOB behind me trying to stop that load with that little car.

BTW, if he ever had an accident with that setup, he'd have been sued to oblivion if there were any injuries. He would've have no leg to stand on at all.....that car, no matter what you do to it, is not rated to carry that load, and is a totally unsafe setup.

My parents tow a Caravan with a 140hp 2007 Civic. There are plenty of people posting complete nonsense in this thread. You don't need a four ton car with 450hp to tow. Some things, yes. Everything? No.

This is true, but there are limitations for every vehicle. Usually the car maker will tell you in the owners manual what the car can safely tow. If the caravan falls within the guideline then tow away but I doubt it does, My 3,400lb 200Hp Malibu can only tow 1000 lbs according to my owners manual. It's transmission is only rated for 4,500lbs so there you go. Even if it had a 300HP engine with the same tranny you still max out at 1000lbs. Is it really worth it to risk blowing a transmission just to save some $$?, heck no, just rent a truck and tow with that, their much more robust drive trains are built for towing!..

Virtually all American cars are now only "rated" to tow 1000 lbs. The Japanese and European cars typically have a more realistic tow spec still on their cars. I believe that the American car manufacturers were trying to force people into SUVs and trucks if they wanted to do anything other than put people into a car.

For example, the 1996-2001 Chrysler Sebring with the relatively wimpy 2.5 liter V6 and the four speed automatic transmission was rated for 2500 lbs. The 2002-2007 Sebring was rated for 1000 lbs even though it had the same transmission and a larger V6 engine. It was practically the same car with some body stiffening.

But, this guy is an idiot. Sure, most people that buy an S2000 are in their 20s and think that it will make them happy even though they will be broke. I don't doubt that this guy can't afford a pickup to pull his 1996 Bayliner to the water. This guy has very little towing experience of course and if he is ever caught in the rain trying to stop that boat, he will be screwed. If the trailer ever goes off the bottom of the ramp, he is screwed.

That's interesting, never thought about it like that, maybe they were afraid of replacing tranny's with the longer warranty's offered nowadays or more likely as you suggest they are trying to force you to buy a truck to tow almost anything..
