Can the artic cooling s1 work and handle the 4870 passively with ramsinks on the memory and vrm's?

The top heatsinks for the most modern GPU's arent really capable of true passive cooling ie. no airflow around them whether directed or not.

My HR-03 GT ran on my GPU passively for 5-10 minutes, no case airflow besides a back exhaust next to the CPU, open case. I was on retreiving an email before RMA'ing my PSU hence the gutted case. Before shutting down, I checked my HD4870 and it was at 86C.

In a closed case environment with my 1,600rpm slipstreams @ 900rpm as intake + exhaust, I can generate enough cooling to keep my HD4870 below 80C during 1 hour of gaming at 790/1100.

The thread linked by Sylvanas highlights my experiences with the stock cooler, running my HR-03 GT "passively" and running it with a modded AC Turbo Module. It also points out users of the Zalman and Arctic Cooling alternatives.

Hopefully, this should provide you with enough information to be of some use and make an informed decision.
 
Umm... I don't have a 4870 but I have a 4850. I can run it passively no problem but it gets a little hot. Still cooler than stock though. I strapped a 120mm onto it and it's nice and chilly now.
