s/w to share/exchange huge files amongst peers/friends on the net

Here goes:
my wife's friend who is a designer asked me the following question:
her team of 4-5 people are looking for software that can link their pc's over the web to share common files.
they render huge files and would like to share them with their co-workers..

they are basically looking for software where you can pick and choose which folders/files they want to share and the other party can then dload them and vice versa
very similar to what grouper used to be.

ofcourse, these are legit work files, so only the 4-5 person group can exchange files, noone else.
any suggestions?

mediamachines.com

will allow big uploads (500 MB).

about $50 a year for someone else to download the files.

they don't tell you this till you've already uploaded the
file.

An alternative to this would be using Gmail as a remote drive for everbody. I'm not quite sure if it's against Gmail's user agreement, though.
using gmail as remote storage

tx for all the quick responses.
they're trying Qnext (though the client seems to disappear from the desktop after a bit)

this would be the best way but if the ftp server is trying to upload to all 4 at the same time, speed goes down x4, what about putting their own personal bit torrent tracker up and sharing the files that way? i have done this in the past for a small group and it worked out very well, in fact for this group it worked out perfectly as the files were larger than 2GB....
