S-Video vs Component Video

My TV has Component video inputs and I have a newer Gamecube that doesn't support the component video cable. Best I can do is S-Video. I called up Nintendo and they said I could drop off my Gamecube at Fed Ex and they will send me a remanufactured Gamecube with the digital out port for free with a new one year warranty.

So, think its worth the hassle to pack up the Gamecube for component video quality or just go ahead with S-Video?

Btw, I thought component was the same as VGA, but with different connectors. Some computer labs on campus use VGA-component convertors for projectors, and they don't look like they actually change the signal.

They aren't the same, but conversion from analog VGA to component is fairly easy.

Oh, and whose brilliant idea was it to remove component support?

I thought it was pretty much a given that any modern console would support component output.

if you have a vcr (with the right i/o) lying around you could hook up you'r Gamecube to you'r tv through the vcr.

and for you'r orignal question, with good cables you shouldn't see a big difference between s-video to component (which btw is almost the same, techniclly wise)

ahh shoulda made it more clear i guess. my tv has all three (svideo,composite,component) but i was just wondering if the jump from svideo to component would be worth the hassle of shipping it to nintendo.

i've decided to go ahead and send it in on monday btw. will probably just pick up a cheap component cable off Ebay if i can't find one in store.

Hell yeah, it's worth it. The picture quality difference is amazing between 480i to 480p mode. Note though, you most likely need to order the component cables directly from Nintendo. Just searched EBay, the current auctions for the component cables are ripoffs.

On a small TV (particularly one that does not support 480p or better) the difference will be minimal at best.

Component really shines over s-video on large sets (and obviously for high def).

Personally I wouldn't waste a component input on a Gamecube. Stupid as hell that it doesn't support it but s-video will be fine.

Even if you do have a set capable of 480P your TV's line doubler is probably already producing a 480P image. You almost certainly won't tell a difference.

Use your component inputs for a good DVD player or high def box (or a console that will actually make use of the high quality interface).

Phone Nintendo directly. When RE4 was released here in North America, many people were able to order the component cables over the phone even though the web page said they were on backorder.

not sure if it'll degrade the video quality but i was hoping to use one of these to hook my DVD, DirecTivo, GC, PS2 to the component input on my tv.

Since the cables are on backorder, i think i'll just hold onto what i've got for now until the cables are in stock.

Only one component input?

Sounds like you need a new TV.

That aside, a component switch should work fine for you.

Any arguable performance lost won't matter considering your TV only has one input to begin with (says a lot about the TV).

Yeah, combine component cables and a 2405FPW and yeah, thats what games on the gamecube should look like.

I just picked up a Sanyo 30" HDTV from Wal-Mart (was on clearance, plus got an extra 10% off because it was a demo model, but in excellent condition). I'm gonna give games and everything a nice thorough run through and see them. I need to get the component cables for the PS2 and see GT4 in all its glory.

i saw the difference in my friends pansonic edtv..

svhs - better than coax but component was even better.. i say 2x in edtv mode watching superbowl beginning of year... BIG BIG difference...
