S video to component?

will it damage anything if I were to use standard RCA cables as component(green y, blue pb, red pr)?
My monitor has the green y, blue pb, red pr input and my video card has an S video output(1900XT) and I have an adapter from S video to green y, blue pb, red pr but I dont have the green y, blue pb, red pr cables, I got the RCA cables, is there any sort of difference other than the colors?

Thanks

The adapter isn't "from SVideo", only the plug looks similar. But anyway ... "standard RCA" cables probably have the wrong impedance, and may affect picture quality. Try it and decide for yourself whether it's good enough.

However do NOT try any such breakout cable other than the one that came with your graphics card.

OK thanks, but I dont know what a breakout cable is. I did notice that the s video and the plug for my card are different... I think I am going to just stick with the DVI that I am using now.

Thanks

The breakout cable is the adapter cable you're talking about.

The reason a cable like that works is that the card is sending a component video signal out the plug that looks like s-video.

If the cable came with your card, then that's fine to use.

If you're doing all this to try to get an improvement vs. a DVI connection, don't bother.

i didnt take any chances with video although i hooked up coax digi out with a regular red audio rca it works

but 6 foot phillips component cables wallyworld 10 dollars and pretty good construction (compare to basic monoprice.com ones)
