S-Video recording problem

I'm trying to transfer some SVHS videos from a JVC SVHS recorder. I've tried with both an older Dazzle DVC100 an a new Encore ENMVC USB devices. I've also tried separate 32 bit Windows and a 32 bit Vista machines (both Home Premium).

With either device on the 32 bit Windows 7 or with the ENMVG on the Vista machine the results are the same. Audio transfers fine. Video through the RCA (yellow) transfers fine, but using the S-Video cord gives only a black screen.

I can successfully play an SVHS tape through the same S-Video cord directly to the TV, so the signal is coming out of the recorder.

Anybody have an idea what's up?
