Hi!

I got my PS3 connected to an old Samsung 20'' CRT, which has S-Video ports. Now, will I see a difference if I buy S-Video cables for PS3 compared to the composite wires I'm using?

Thank you

Yes, but maybe not a $20 difference on a 20" TV.

FYI, you can use PS2 cable sets as well as PS3.

In my opinion, S-video is much better and crisper looking than composite... but you've got a high-def device there, any chance you could hook it up to an LCD computer monitor instead?

Yeah, I've got a Samsung 225BW 22'' LCD monitor. How can I hook it up to it? What wires do I need?

Does it have a DVI input? You can get HDMI->DVI adapters.

He'll be able to use the monitor just fine, a lot of people on AT do it for both the PS3 and 360.

OP, using that monitor will look SO much better, you'll kick yourself for not doing it earlier.

wait, is this possible on a monitor with vga connections?

I've never seen an HDMI to VGA cable, but they may exist. Failing that, an HDMI to DVI cable used in conjunction with a DVI to VGA adapter may work fine. Then again, that sounds too similar to total protonic reversal.

what you'll need is a dvi switch, dvi cable and an HDMI to DVI cable, assuming you're still using the monitor for the computer.

PS3 -> HDMI-DVI cable -> DVI switch
PC -> DVI Cable -> DVI switch

DVI switch -> DVI cable -> monitor

and yes, it will be a world of difference coming from an old CRT monitor...

EDIT: i just realized you're gonna need something for the audio as well. assuming that you don't have an audio receiver for the HDMI or the optical connection, you're most likely gonna need the audio (red/white) from the component cables. the easiest solution is to hook up any old stereo system to the ps3 using the component cable for the ps3/ps2 in addition to the HDMI cable for the video.

HDMI is completely digital. VGA is completely analog. DVI-I carries both analog (on the four pins near the cross) and digital (the other two banks of pins). You cannot go from HDMI to VGA or vica versa with just a cable - you'll need some electronics to translate the analog to digital, or vica versa.
