I'm not that far through it at all, but I didnt realize the lasting effects things had on you. I got bit by a dog near the beginning and ran back to turn in USB drive. i start panting then realized my health is at 10% and there is a blood symbol up. I panick and open my inventory and then die.

I restart from my save, bandage myself and walk out to find a different stash. Its a radiation zone that turns everything fuzzy so I back out and head back to camp. I then realize I have radiation posion. My bandages help a bit but I cant remove the radiation. The trader doesnt either. I die again. Does this part get easier? Are there places where I can buy radiation kits/vodka? I'm used to the radiation from Fallout 3 which was pretty easy to deal with.

In Stalker you have to avoid with all costs the radiation poisoned areas. Once you get into one of them, you should probably just reload your last save, because your health will drop pretty fast. This is why you should save very often in this game.

Equipping a radiation-reducing artifact *really* helps (I don't recall how early you discover them, though)

well, one of the first side quests you get is to go get some stash the bandits were talking about. it appears to be surrounded by radiation... do i just leave it? circle it until i find a way in? or wait till i have a radiation reducing artifact?

I suggest you grab the Oblivion Lost mod, it makes the game "behave" better in regards to many things, carry capacity and health included.

Sounds like the OP is in the beginning stages of the game, and at that point there aren't a lot of things to help you out yet. He might not have found the good armor hidden in the attic yet either. You do manage to get more to help you survive as you go on. Saving is your friend!

Its a major choice to suggest Oblivion Lost as the first addon. He might want to play it through regularly first. Once you've run OL, you won't want to head back and play vanilla again, that's for sure. I didn't care for the anomaly crafting part, so I've never finished OL, but it is very well done.

I don't remember losing health that fast from radiation.

You can't buy any antirads from the guy you meet at the beginning of the game (Sidorivich)?

Loot every guy you kill as they usuall have anti rad pills and vodka, both reduce the effects of radiation- as you progress you will have so much of these things stacked up you won't need to worry about radiation much.

You can always return to search the stashes you couldn't loot earlier. Stick to the main road as much as possible until you reach the bar. By then you should have found some good armor laying on the ground, with enhanced rad protection. As other said also, search every corpse for anti-rads, as they are pretty expensive to buy in the earlier stages and later you won't need them most probably. Vodka is an ok substitute for the anti-rads, as long as you don't use it in excess. And yeah, save often, squeeze a manual save from time to time. The Zone is pretty tricky. Have fun!

Did you start on Veteran? I just bought the game on steam last night and started on Stalker...been bitten and stumbled into radiation a bunch and have had no bleeding or radiation poisoning effects yet...

This game is very very difficult when you first start out. Make sure you stick with it. Once you get some better weapons/armor and you can actually stay alive, the desolation makes it really immersive.

I simply love this game. I bought it as soon as it was out, but never got the time to play it (too much time invested in WoW, I have tons of games waiting to be played).

I tried to start playing it couple of times over the years, but found it a bit "clunky" and couldn't get into it. Until I installed Oblivion Lost -mod about a month ago and since then it's been a blast. A bit rough on the edges still, and the it's quite unforgiving in the beginning of the game, but it just keeps getting better further you progress.

One of my favorite games I've played in years. After SoC I have Clear Sky waiting to be played next :)

Agreed. It's get a bit discouraging in the beginning. But once you start picking up better weapons and armor and enough ammo, it picks up quite nicely! I couldnt put the game down when I first played it! It's even better with the OL mod, too!
