I just bought stalker the other day and have yet been able to enjoy it. I was using 100.65 drivers but Performance was lacking and was getting frequent crashes out of the game. I've tried switching to the latest 158.xx drivers and performance is great running at 1920x1200, full AA on the slider and vsync on!! the problem is that It'll crash out after a few minutes when I try to quick save or switch to the main menu. I patched the game aswell with minimal luck. Heat is definately not an issue, card is running cool and I dont oc anything in my rig. I can game in oblivion for hours with no problems whatsoever. I'm running Vista hp and I always use safe mode and driver cleaner when changing drivers. This is the only issue I've encounteres with this rig of this nature. I've done a moderate amount of searching the web but have yet to find out too much. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

btw, rig is in sig

I initially tried the Nvidia v100.65 beta drivers & had quite a few problems with them including BSOD's when not running any 3-D applications at all, then I tried the XG-modified version & have been using it even since without any problems ... I'm not sure excatly what the difference is but it stabilized these drivers on my system.

This game has known problems with Vista. Either play it on XP or wait for the next patch.

You tried 165.01 drivers, seems a few Stalker gamers are happy with these drivers with Vista.

Also you might find this interesting.

As of last night with the 158.18 drivers my issues have almost vanished. I still crashed out upon exit of the game but atleast this time I got to chose when that was.... This lastest driver is very good..... too bad it wasn't the 8800 release driver. I would have been a very happy gamer months ago

Try selecting "Run as Admin" in properties of the Stalker exe.

Install the Vista 8800 drivers released today. Those may be the ones with stalker fixes built in.

I havent tested them yet cuz I lost my mind trying to game in vista. I dual boot now and vista rarely gets used honestly. Its sitting there waiting for some good DX10 game.
