whats up with all the locked doors in the antenna area? i did find a code off a dead soldier in there but i don't even know if the code is for that area. it could be in pripyat for all i know. even the dude writes in his PDA that he has no idea where the door is.

I love the custscenes too.

Xyclone,
I did the same as you on my first go, just finish the game from Pripyat, then do it right the next time. You will get a different ending on your second go.

I got one because one of the snipers I shot actually fell off the building ... but otherwise they're a lot more prevalent at Chernobyl Power Plant.

Anyone else find that Agropom was really easy if you don't use the sewer entrance? After finding Strelok's stuff I ended up going back out the way I came in, and approached Agropom from the road. There are a bunch of trailers at a perfect distance from the gate to let you open fire on the guards with a rifle (I was just using the AK), while keeping REALLY good cover. And once the base is on alert, all of the guards come after the action, so they end up filing out one or two at a time, bottlenecking themselves at the gate. I ended up killing all except one roaming guard and two watchtower-guys before even entering the base.

Before trying this I had actually tried going through the sewer entrance, but it was the middle of the afternoon. I looked around, realized I was between two watchtowers and that there were guards all around, and said "****** this" and went back down the hole like a groundhog seeing its shadow. Hitting the gate worked so much better.

That's the beauty of the game. You don't have to do many things one way, there's often choices. :)

I went in at the Agroprom sewer end, then came out the army base end. I noticed the barracks and started to drool. Spent the next 4 hours shooting my way out:). Most fun and rage I've experienced in a while. The sad thing is I actually managed to run out of 5.56 ammo for the AK. Had to hold the last assault back with a pistol until I capped a few 'scouts'. Good times.

On a side note, was looking through my Start menu, and noticed that Stalker and Company of Heroes are published by THQ. Both don't require CDs in the drive to play. Hope more good games get published by them in the future.

I used the sewer entrance and ran into the nearest barracks. There's only one entrance and you can gun down the enemy as they enter or through the windows.

 ... I used a sawed off Shotgun for this task!

I love the open-endedness of this game vs. a lot of FPS games that are on-a-wire. Don't get me wrong, games like Call of Duty/COD2 etc. are still great games, but I feel more in control in a game like this one. Alas, it has been retired for me, put aside in favor of a replay of Far Cry with my new hardware ... seeing that game 'properly' for the first time is great :D

For real. The first time I had a poltergeist encounter in X18 I yelped so loudly that my room-mate heard it from his side of the apartment and came to see what was wrong with me.

Half-Life 2, Doom 3 Assets in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?

This week, threads have started showing up on various forums containing what appears to be evidence that GSC Game World's recently released shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl makes use of a number of graphical assets taken directly from commercially released games such as Valve's Half-Life 2 and id Software's Doom 3. Many forum posters are speculating that the assets were used without authorization.

One of the first threads to be made regarding the matter was posted to the MapCore forums; the thread creator, user michi.be, posted screen captures allegedly comparing the light image folders from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to those of Doom 3 (all screen captures locally mirrored). Tellingly, though some of the images had been modified in various ways, such as having hue or saturation adjustments, the original filenames from the Doom 3 folders remained the same--for example, a file with the Doom-esque name "lights_impflash.dds," referring to one of the game's enemies, was visually modified in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. folder but retained the filename.

Later in the same thread, user Johnny posted an image allegedly comparing a water texture from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to a water texture from Half-Life 2. As in the Doom 3 case, the images were nearly identical and the filename was unchanged with the exception of its extension.

---

Responding to inquiries made by Shacknews, id Software CEO Todd Hollshead stated:

I've seen a post on a web forum that claims DOOM3 assets are used in another game, but we've been working hard on Enemy Territory: Quake Wars as well as our own internal project and have not had the time to fully investigate or otherwise verify that the claim is true. Only from what I've seen on the Web, it's concerning. However, it may turn out to be nothing. Nevertheless, it would be improper to make any decision about a course of action until we find out whether the claim is true, and what assets from DOOM3, if any, have potentially been used.

Hollenshead's reply suggests that if S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developer GSC Game World did in fact make use of id Software assets, it was not done with id's consent. Shacknews has also contacted Valve and GSC on the matter, but neither party had responded at the time this story was published.

bad boys ... bad boys ... what 'cha gonna do?

Eh...

Just lazy, not thieving bastards;).

According to observations by a reader of tech site The Inquirer as well as other internet detectives, that is indeed the case. The common source in question appears to be Marlin Studios, a company that offers pre-made texture packs in a variety of themes, intended for use in video games and movies.

"Take your graphics to a new level!" promises Marlin Studios' site. "Select from our world-famous professional quality libraries of Premium 3D Models and Seamless Textures, or purchase a moneysaving pack deal."

According to today's report, several of the textures found to have been shared between the three games were indeed confirmed to be included in various Marlin Studios texture packs. Amongst its clients, Marlin Studios lists Doom 3 publisher Activision, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. publisher THQ, and Half-Life 2 developer Valve Software.

still *bad* boys ;)

:)

at least there won't be anything 'legal' in the way of an expansion

Manned up and went through the first lab. As scary as I had anticipated, but it's IMPOSSIBLE to survive while trying to leave... I keep getting owned from all sides by military AND bandits.

I've been seeing alot of good games come out of THQ lately: Company of Heroes, the Full Spectrum Warrior series, Supreme Commander, and now STALKER. I have to say I'm very impressed...they are reminding me of Sierra at the time of Half Life and SWAT 3...lots of good games. Hopefully they won't turn into another EA!

I didn't find this that hard. I think it might have been because I ran for the surface as soon as the dream sequence ended, so the incoming guys didn't have much time to spread out through the lab. By the point I hit the guys, the path through them was pretty linear, so they didn't have much chance to get around me. Once back on the surface, keep in mind that you don't have to kill everyone. I shot it out for a while, but then I realized that there was one of those big mutant uglies in the courtyard creating a nice distraction, and I bolted.

Also, I've found it EXTREMELY helpful to remap the quick medkit and quick bandage keys to Z and C, so I don't have to take my hands away from the mouse or WASD to heal up in the middle of a firefight.

Ugh, in my game that big mutant ugly was RIGHT behind me when I exited the lab. I got sandwiched between him and the military but somehow managed to survive.

A little late to the party, but:

I will be loading up the game today! :D I can't wait! First game I've been really excited about since Oblivion (which I never did finish  )

AFAIK, there's only one patch for STALKER out now, right? It's a tiny thing...like 2MB. I'm intending on applying said patch straight off. Good idea?

Interesting... that pseudogiant (I'm assuming) was in the lab wrecking the troops that were waiting for me as I was going back up. Someone shot him and he bolted right past me down the those long steps, never saw him again. The top wasn't that bad, troops always have a lot of ammo so I make sure to help myself to it. :D

yeah, only 1 patch so far. but whats weird is that if you go to play MP, the server browser will show servers with like 4 different versions.

If I remember correctly they are:
1.0000
1.0001
1.1000
1.1009

As far as I know the only reason not to patch up would be that it breaks old saved games. So if you're starting from the beginning anyways, go ahead.
