I decided to download this and spend some time going through it.

**For those that don't know: STALKER build 1935 was released a few years ago by GSC Game World (for whatever reason). It is an old build from 2004 (development began in 2001 for Shadow of Chernobyl).

It is very much an alpha build (the story is not playable, it's more like a chance just to walk around some of the original levels) but it was extremely interesting for a big STALKER fan like me to get a glimpse into the developer's original vision for the game.

What I was immediately struck with checking out these levels was the original scope of the game. It was going to be HUGE. This probably explains a lot....it would appear that perhaps they bit off far more than they could chew.

Levels with labs (like Yantar) had the labs integrated into the level....no loading screens between going from topside to going down into the underground.

There is SO MUCH content that was cut from release. The Dead City, the swamps that we saw in Clear Sky, and several other areas. It almost seems like a lot of the levels that did stay were almost cut into half the original size.

Here is a flythrough of a lot of the levels:

I just kept thinking that if GSC would have had the resources to take this build all the way to release, it would have been incredible. What is really amazing is that they had this much ambition for an FPS title in 2004, when the typical FPS (save FarCry) was just one corridor connected to another.

There are even vehicles (that you have to open the door, close the door, and start to drive).

The alpha-build seems to have a lot more emphasis on mutants and zombies. LOTS of zombies, and they're quite different from the released zombies....quite a bit more horrific. I think the original atmosphere was actually a bit more dark and scary. You can hear blood-curdling screams from people walking into anomalies and getting torn apart by mutants in the distance.

The "Lost Alpha" mod has been in the works for several years now, which is basically a European mod team that decided to remake SoC into GSC's original design. It has been delayed several times but word is it will finally be released this year. Going through this alpha build has me very excited for what they might be coming up with.

Try Stalkersoup. It's all that and probably more, despite all the bugs I enjoy it a lot!

...and it's available now. If the Lost Alpha will ever become a reality I'll try it for sure, but I'm not holding my breath for any "future" Stalker content.

That video was pretty cool, thanks for posting the link.

I read somewhere around release time, about vehicles being taken out, and then having to instance parts of the levels. Was all kind of backlash about that, but surprisingly the game was great, and is still one of my favorite shooters today.

Now if only we could get a sequel, with vehicles... that could lead to some really interesting encounters.

I tried Stalkersoup, but I thought it was absolutely atrocious. And quite possibly the worst looking environmental treatment the game has ever received.

Different strokes, eh? ;) Different mods for everybody.

I actually dislike most of the mods for SoC. I've played OGSE, L.U.R.K., and Oblivion Lost as well, and I don't know what's up with these guys making the game look like garbage. Usually desaturated with ridiculous levels of contrast and SSAO darkening. It looks better in vanilla than any of those versions.

The only real visual improvement I've seen on the game is Complete2009. That guy did it right. The thing I don't like about Complete is how items are strewn about like candy. Halfway through the game and you're already rich. Way too easy.

MiseryMod (for CoP) and Complete are really about the only mods I've played that seem to have any polish / artistry to them. I like a lot of the mechanics that L.U.R.K. used (much better stealth capabilities), but I don't know what he was thinking with the absurd amount of bloom, and if you turn it off, the game looks awful.

What has me excited about the Lost Alpha mod team is that they aren't going to mess with game so much visually. At least judging from the video, it doesn't look like they're going overboard with the cheesy darkening and contrast like all the other modders:
