S/PDIF on Video Card

I was setting up a media PC and noticed that my ATI video card has a coax S/PDIF out. Seems weird to find it on the video card instead of the sound card. There are no digital connections from sound card to video card. Documentation is extremely light.

How does the S/PDIF out work from the video card? Seems unlikely it would be equivalent to a sound card. What's the deal?

I'm guessing it's a pass-thru, whatever content is being streamed into the card (either through A/V IN or CATV) goes out through there to the appropriate device (your receiver).

Have you tried hooking it up to anything? The card came with the red cable with the HDTV out on it, that cable has the orange connector for hte S/PDIF
