Hi All....

I was wondering if any of you guys have suggestions on how I could share my internet connection with my daughter. I am connected to the web via a cable modem. I was hoping to just buy a couple of these adapters and share the internet with her. Distance for the connection is about 15-20 feet in a 1 story home.

Anyone with any suggestions on how I could do this and keep it simple would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking!!

Well the most elegant way would be a router with an integrated wireless access point, a USB Wireless adapter for your daughter and a normal ethernet cable connection to your own machine (assuming it is in the same room as your cable modem). Hook up your PC, set up the router with you ISPs acces codes, set the wireless part of the router for WEP encryption (random asci characters and numbers will do fine), set SSID to something other than default and then enable stealth or hiding the SSID, hook up the USB adapter on your daughters machine, enter WEP key and SSID in its network properties, set IE to use a LAN connection... done. The IP addresses will be managed by the router as it has a DHCP server on board.
The benefits are that your machine doesn't have to be running all the time when your daughter wants to use the net.

The other solution is to just get two USB wireless adapters, set up SSID and WEP just like I described with the router and use the windows Internet Connection Sharing. You need to set the IPs etc manually when doing this (the windows DHCP service has never really worked for me) but there are a ton of websites explaining in detail how to do this.

If you go the Two Wireless Adapter way. You will have to share the Internet connection via Wireless Ad-Hoc and use Win ICS.

Such an arrangement is usually very Quirky.

Get a Wireless Cable/DSL Router and One USB adapter. The cost should be similar or $10 to $29 more than buying two USBs. (Getting a Wireless Router will also protect your system better).

The following collection of links might shade light on the reasons as well as describe the process.

Ignore the prices in the links bellow. The same or similar hardware can be found for 60%-90% less.
