S.M.A.R.T utility?

anyone know a good low resource system service that can run in the system tray to monitor smart parameters and look for hard drive problems?

I used to use SMART but it is a trial version. Now I use Western Digital's utility program, which is similar in some ways and is free. It is called WD Diagnostics and can take various tests of your hard drive(s).
