S.M.A.R.T. test fails, what now?

A 100GB 2.5" Seagate ST910021AS HD was supplied with a refurbished (evidently factory refurb) Lenovo Thinkpad T61 I bought around a year ago. I swapped out the HD for a new 640GB Samsung I had but now I need a HD to replace one that failed in a Thinkpad T60. The 100GB drive fails Seatools' "Basic" S.M.A.R.T. test (I hardly used it at all!). Does this mean I shouldn't use it? Should I just buy a factory refurb (presumably with warranty) 120GB 5400RPM 2.5" HD off ebay? I can get one for around $28 shipped.

no warranty? I always cite SMART as a reason for RMA for HDs.

I think the warranty wouldn't supersede the one on the refurb Thinkpad T61. I just looked it up, and my records show I purchased it "Buy it Now" on ebay last Halloween, Oct. 31, 2010. Maybe I can get warranty support, but I'm not terribly optimistic about it. I guess I'll contact the vendor, who I believe are a company that leases computers. :\

yeah ditch the drive dude.smart imminent failure means all remapped sectors are done and its about to start losing more (if not yet). thank god drives are cheap! good time to upgrade!

As the others have stated, don't use it for anything other than a scratch drive.

I wouldn't even bother with HD's that are refurbed. The "warranty" on those are at most 90 days, and when you factor in the shipping costs on a RMA, it just isn't worth the savings.

I had a "re-certified" Seagate fail on me on 1 hour of use, and they expected me to pay shipping back to them again, even though they are the ones that sent this "re-certified" HD in the first place. 🙄 It failed both SMART & the short tests as well.

HDD is not something you should buy refurbished.
As other said, ditch the drive that failed SMART and buy a new drive.

OK, thanks to everybody who chimed in. A new drive it is with full warranty. I may try to get warranty support for the failing drive. I'll buy a new one anyway. This will be in a laptop that's running as my file server. The only application running on it AFAIK will be an MP3 ripper (averaging maybe an hour or two a day, from audio in from a USB sound card). Would a 5400RPM be better than a 7200RPM? If I don't need the speed, the lower RPM should have it running cooler and cooler is better.
