S.M.A.R.T. hard drive giving bad drive message-how much time do I have?

I have a 40 gig Maxtor in my home system (only one hard drive). Enabled S.M.A.R.T with the latest motherboard (ECS K7S5A) about 1-2 months ago. Starting Friday or so, on reboot I get a warning that the hard drive is failing, back up or replace ASAP. Any idea how much time I have?

Running Win 2000 & system on basically 24/7. No apparent problems at present other than the warning message.

...about as much time as being bitten by a black mamba. No, really, mine died hard on the third boot after the msg.

and what did/do you then in case this happens ?

RMA, package to maxtor, new drive in two days ?

Thanks Danlz, for the words of warning.

I'm super busy this week, but better find the time to get a new HD and transfer contents over. Will then deal with Maxtor about RMA'ing the old one. No current backup on that computer-and I don't want to go through the hassle of reinstalling everything.

it varies pretty dramatically in how much time you have left.... basically anywhere from a few boots to two months.
