S.M.A.R.T. and my Hitachi drive

Hi, got this drive for about 2 to 3 months.,

it is the 8mb sata 80gb drive.

i installed the S.M.A.R.T. utilities to test the stability of my drive.

I do BT., but not every nite. may be at most 3 nites a week.

when i right click my drive/smart, i see the reliablity dropped a bit., now it is about 5/7 (0 is pre-failure)

but after a few reboots, it will max 7/7 again and once i BT, it will be dropped.

So..
is the rating correct?

I wouldn't worry about it as SMARTY pants was orginated to read off of PATA and all is well after rebooting. I don't even use those Uts cause when software tries to undermine hardware, I'm cautious but just back up regulary just in case...

Hmmm... I don't know. Try a SMART utility that's more detailed like ActiveSMART.

Just d/l'ed and tried out a trial version of ActiveSMART of my PATA HDDs >>> wow - didnt know it was possible to monitor all those various parameters of your HDDs. Seems pretty cool to me.

Got OK for everything 🙂 >>> gives me some confidence in my IBM HDDs as ive had them for a while now and abuse the hell outta them as anything. Although... im not sure how good these kinda software monitoring things really are... 😕

Anybody monitor their HDDs performance regularly for any good reason?

You can also use Lavalys Everest to monitor your SMART values for free. While SMART won't catch everything, it does give you up-to-date readings on the number of bad and reallocated sectors so if you see increases there, you know that there will be problems soon.
