's' key on laptop stopped working

Hey guys..... the 's' key on my sisters laptop stopped working and seeing as I don't know a huge amount about laptops I'm wondering what to do about it?

Would replacing the keyboard be the best option? If so, is this easy enough to do?

Any other ideas? I know you can buy new keys but since the key isn't broken, it's just not working I don't think that would solve the problem would it? Something has to be wrong underneath the key mechanism?

It could be nothing but a dust bunny. Have you tried blowing it out with an air jet?

Well she just told me about it tonight so I haven't had a chance to have a look at it yet; however I don't believe we have an air jet type thing. Is it hard to remove the key?

I hate to suggest a temporary fix but it may due in a pinch.

If your sister needs an upper case S, she can put her keyboard in num lock mode, hold down the alt key, and then use the numeric keypad to type in 083, release the alt key and she will have a upper Case S to the right of the cursor. For lowercase s its 115.

For the rest of the askii codes, just google it and you can type greek letters and all kinds of other things not on a standard keyboard.

Or just hook up a USB keyboard...

But yes, if the air doesnt fix it, you may need to replace the KB.

An excellent suggestion, as I kick myself for not suggesting it.

Hey guys..... the 's' key on my sisters laptop
I have an older Dell laptop where the diagonal row of keys X S W 2 stopped functioning. Replacing the keyboard didn't cure the issue. So presumably one electrical line on the motherboard has failed. This seems less likely for your situation of precisely one key not working, but might be worth keeping in the back of your mind. Obviously the USB keyboard is an acceptable workaround.

It could be either hardware or software. For my dell laptop, replacing the keyboard didn't fix anything and I had to reinstall Windows to fix it. That's a software problem. To fix a hardware problem with keyboard, just clean it, reconnect the cable to the motherboard, and if all else fails, replace the keyboard.
