S@H's Matt Lebofsky comments on cheating and S@H II

Since my first post got lost at the top of the thread, I'd figure
I'd post again at the bottom and add a couple thoughts:

1. There's discussion now in the group to formally state our
"cheater policy" somewhere on the website. Hopefully something
will be posted soon.

2. SETI@home II will be a vastly different project, more or less
taking over once SETI@home I is complete - there may be overlap,
but this is uncertain at this point. We are quite busy working
on a generalized open-source framework for distributed computing,
which SETI@home II will use. Since this framework addresses most
(if not all) the problems we had in SETI@home I, it will be
different enough that people will probably have to re-register.
Actually, I'm not sure about that.. There will be a SETI@home II
page soon answering all your questions. Really.

- Matt - SETI@home

So look for cheating policy to be stated on the website soon and look for a S@H II website soon.

It's nice to see someone(fromS@H) is finally making some sort of comment about this. The natives were getting a little restless over there on the msg boards.

I hope we don't have to re-register for S@H2! ,I don't want to chance someone taking my nick! 🙁

Can't wait to hear more about S@H2 though 🙂

Assimilator1, I just registered myself with your nick on SETI-II.

I'll sell it to you for - $1,000,000 Blev

in small, uncooked shellfish. 😀

Thanks for the info Crazee! It will be interesting to see how many folks make the transition to S@H II. I would love to know when S@H I will will end!

Well, they're going to call it S@H2, maybe you can call yourself Assimilator2! 😉

I spoke with David Anderson today (via E-mail) and some more insight about the cheating as well as the Next Generation project. I can say to all of those out here that pride themselves as coders, you can have an opportunity to help with the code especially in insuring against cheaters in the future.

I'm checking to see of OK to post about it. Standby...

Thanks for the heads-up Crazee! 🙂

LOL@JonB 😛

I think open-sourcing is the best way to attempt to be more proactive in preventing cheats and other loopholes. SETI II should be interesting though... 🙂

Hell yes, With seti2 I will rize with the big guys. Ok, maybe not.

But SETI2 Will be cool. Hopefully take longer per WU so the bandwitch problem will be solved for a few years.

<--- going to start adding CPU time to other projects. Wants his name on all of 'em. even though I will be at the bottom of them all 🙂

What bandwidth problems?😕 ,they sorted that out months ago with the new 100meg pipe 😉

Jonb
Damn you!😛 ,well I just registered Jonb for myself ,it'll cost ya $2,000,000 to get it back😀

As promised here is the info from The Director of SETI@Home

Dave:
This cheating thing has flared up again recently. Today we posted a position statement on the SETI@home message board, basically saying:
- Modifying our current software to prevent this type of cheating is possible but would take a bunch of time, which would detract from our current efforts at finding ET, and developing the next-generation software (BOINC)
- BOINC will prevent this type of cheating.
- In the meantime, as time permits we identify obvious cheaters and zero out their accounts. BOINC is open-source. It's functional but pre-alpha. It's at http://sf.net/projects/boinc
The best way for people (if they're programmers) is to download and read the BOINC code, and help us get it right this time.

Doh!!!!! Assimilator1, you are too smart for me. I will send you the $1,000,000 Blev, plus some beer and babes. Be nice to them, because they are accustomed to DNet players, not Alien Hunters and their genetically enhanced organs.

David,

I looked on the message board for the position statement and couldn't find it. Is he referring to the Matt Lebofsky posting linked here? If so I would have hoped that they would have started a new thread with the position where everyone would see it.

Hi Will,

We are "The Natives" as Spacehead put it and Dr Anderson and the SETI crew are basically allowing us to "Police" our own, help ourselves out with the code to help make it better and "Distribute" the information through channels such as here on this Forum. What an incredible opportunity and continued demonstration of the True Power of the Internet and the Online Community.
