Repost from Smokeball's 1pm update yesterday:

Tuffguy thread Go down about 3/4 of the way - a week's vacation by a Moderator. It's still not known whether Tuffguy was in the right or wrong.

Thanks for the stats, HB! :)

Sad day when a teammate leaves. :( Especially when it's over a "mod" situation. :(

I wish people would realize the only ones they hurt are the teammates. Pulling their WUs from the team doesn't affect the mods or Anandtech in the least. :(

I'm just a positive thinker and assumed he was using a Corporate version (those do not require activation) or a free version of some sort made available from Microsoft either thru, say, MSDN Universal or as part of being on the beta test team, or any number of other methods.

Oh geez, are you telling me that TuffGuy got put in the corner because he said he's running a "free" version of XP?

Sorry, but that's just stupid. Yeah, I know it's against the rules to discuss ware... but I didn't see anything about where to get it, a registration code, etc. What's the big freaking deal? If the mods are going to suspend every member running "free" versions of a Microsoft OS they'd probably lose a majority of us. I mean, how many people can honestly say they have a legit copy (media and license) for every OS they have installed?

I better stop before I get myself banned... :disgust: :disgust: :disgust: :disgust:

Very sad to see you leave Tuffguy... :( But I can understand your point of view. That's the way AnandTech treats valuable members... No warning and BOOM ! :(
All the SETI team will miss you. The light is always on... Come back.

Thanks for the stats HB.

Tuffguy probably should have clarified, but I am also running a FREE version of Windows XP. And yes, it is 100% legitimate. Ever heard of a MSDN subscription? You get all kinds of neat stuff in there. MS sent my company a completely free edition of WinXP Pro with 10 licenses as part of our corporate MSDN account. Not only is this version free, it doesn't have to be registered when it is installed. I guess MS just wants us to see how swell the OS is so we'll buy XP licenses for our 1000+ workstations. Too bad half of the computers couldn't even run it... ;)

I can't say whether this is the case with Tuffguy, but I wanted to point out that it's very possible that his system is completely legit. Personally, I think one of the last posters in that thread would be more deserving of a vacation than Tuffguy!

I'll second that opinion.

Tuffguy,
Please come back.
You are an asset to this team and these forums.
I think the mod was a bit over zealous.
