Since the Pentium classic, the x86 name for processors has gotten hard to assign to a processor type. What processors are considered i686?

I think it is PPro, P2, P3, etc. I don't think that includes Athlon cores though. Remember, this is for Linux.

Right, and one of my Linux boxes is running a K62. Is that considered a i686? Or just PPro, P2, PIII, Celeron, Athlon, and Duron?

I think K6-2 is i586. If you use the Redhat distro, the nongraphic login screen will tell you what it is.

It would say something like this:

Redhat 6.2(Zoot) on a i_86

I know there's a link off the main SETI page to a script that uses nested directories to run a bunch of instances of SETI, one after the other. This results in a chache.

the intel 686 is the pentium pro, p2, p3, and celeron. the athlon is not an i686 by any measure. it is i386 compatible, though, as it uses the IA-32 instruction set as its exterior set (it uses a completely different one internally, like the i686 does
