i'm thinkin of getting the thinkpad t40 1.3GHz Pentium M, 256MB, 30GHz (model 237319U) which has the integrated Intel PRO/Wireless Network Connection 802.11b.
but i want to be able to upgrade to g using an adaptor card (is that what it's called???) anyhow, after reading the fine print, i find that there's a legal footnote:
Wi-Fi wireless is based on IEEE 802.11a and/or 802.11b and this wireless LAN product has been designed to permit legal operation worldwide in regions in which it is approved. Operation on channels 12-14 are not permitted in all regulatory regions of the world. Consequently the wireless LAN feature is limited to operate on channels 1-11 and will not support channels 12, 13 and 14. This product has been tested and certified to be interoperable by the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance and is authorized to carry the Wi-Fi logo.
Wireless upgradable models can be wireless enabled with the addition of an optional wireless LAN Mini PCI Card. These systems are designed to operate only with wireless LAN Mini PCI options sold by IBM.
has anyone had any success in using another brand's card for wireless use? also, does anyone know when ibm plans to offer the t40 with intergrated 802.11g now that it's compliant? if soon, then i might just try to wait for that. thanks a lot.
