One more reason to underachieve.

Ok. I didn’t want to post but I cannot resist. I ordered Jacob’s graduation cake from Publix. A $70 cake!! He earned a 4.79 GPA. Publix refused to write the words Summa Cum Laude because I was using ‘profanity!’ They put three dashes instead of the word!
How utterly ridiculous and I will be speaking to a manager for a refund. Shame on you Publix for turning an innocent Latin phrase into a total embarrassment for having to explain to my son and others (including my 70 year old mother) about this joke of a cake. My son was humiliated!!! I seriously couldn’t make this crap up!!!!
Funny-not funny.

Edit: The person who picked up the cake on the day of the graduation did not know what I requested to be put on the cake.

Not only was the worker stupid, they were unmotivated to even research the request. Lazy... If I were requested to write something I didn't understand, I'd throw it in a search engine to see what it was. The decorations aren't even that great, so their stupidity can't be overlooked due to exceptional craftsmanship.

That's hilarious.

My other question is how do you graduate Summa cum laude from a homeschool? Don't you just make up titles when there's only one or two of you?

Home school association would be my guess. West Ashley is in Charleston so there could be several hundred graduates.

Intent was noble. But crikey, learn a little Latin. Or even simple graduation terminology ... "with highest praise"

If you are accustomed to a southside Vaginia accent, Summa Cum Laude sounds like a naughty anime character.

For those that didn't read the story there was no human involved, she filled out a web form when ordering the cake and it rejected the phrase so she used the special instructions area to provide a link and the Latin translation for the phrase. The "dumbass" is the programming behind the algorithm that handled the order.

You know, when you read the thread title on its own, the first thought should be: "Well, I would hope so?"

I don't think computers read "special instructions". Those are for manual intervention, and the human backed up the computer's decision.

Or it could be that nobody read anything and the dashes were inserted by the algorithm much like any content filter does. The store is not commenting past apologizing and offering a refund for the cake.

They could, at least, offer the H for a happy ending to the story.
