S.ATA Vs. IDE on WD Caviar SE {'JB' labled drives}

Is it true that since the drive was made with the intention of using it in an IDE "environment" from the first place, that the S.ATA version of it actually has a chip installed, that takes care of IDE-to-S.ATA conversion?

If so, does that mean I will see NO performance increase WHAT-SO-EVER?

TIA!

i dont know about a chip, but i have read (sorry i cant get you a link) there is no performance difference mainly because the drive isnt peaking out on the IDE yet.

i think its just an attempt to phase out IDE ribbons , which will happen eventually, but honestly is going to take many years.

There are a few SATA drives out there that are native SATA, but most are still conversions. You won't see a significant difference in performance using SATA over PATA unless you jump to Raptors. IAC, it's still SCSI for me - I don't run any ATA hard drives...

10x!

How do I setup WinXP on an S.ATA drive?

I've never done this before... do I need to press F6 when XP installation program needs a driver for a 3rd party controller?

My impression is that XP doesn't support S.ATA HDs in a native manner like IDE HDs. Am I right?

Most mobos that support SATA either come with a diskette for the F6 manoeuver or with a utility to create one. And be sure to check your BIOS for the SATA settings - mine has an option to select either SATA as IDE or SATA as RAID - depending which you choose, there may be more settings available.

Change bios settings to sata, the motherboard should come with a sata floppy disk. Pretty much what zepper said. If you dont think you could do that, just go ide with rounded cables, same performance, excluding raptors.
