Hi guys, I am currently checking what CPU is better, the Ryzen 9 4900HS laptop CPU or the Ryzen 5 3600 desktop CPU?

Also, is there a hierarchy list of the current AMD CPU based on performance where it includes both laptop and desktop CPUs? I am quite confused about AMDs naming convention i.e. Ryzen 3, 5, 7 and 9. Not sure what is the best in terms of price to performance ratio for desktop and laptops CPU. They say for the desktop it is the Ryzen 5 3600.

At stock the two are quite close in performance, while Ryzen 9 4900HS still beats Ryzen 5 3600 in ST and MT. The big difference is that the former achieves this performance within a 35W TDP envelope, while the latter uses 65W. The latter being on desktop means that you can overclock it, so if power consumption is of no concern to you you can get more performance out of it and pass the former.

Since you compare a laptop with a desktop chip here comparing price to performance ratio doesn't really make sense (you can't buy laptop chips without laptops). The grouping into Ryzen 3, 5, 7 and 9 is separate for laptop and desktop, for laptop chips 8 cores is the top end, for desktop chips 16 cores is (even more if you include HEDT Threadripper which goes up to 64 cores).

Thanks for the replies, so basically, I am planning on getting a laptop I like the G14 I have tried one before and I was so impressed with the CPU performance. I am an Intel i7-8750H user coming from a Zephyrus S laptop.

However, my use-case primarily is for high-end VR, I was satisfied with the RTX 2080 Max-Q before but right now I sold my laptop and looking into probably getting a desktop and a laptop.

But I am curious with the performance of the Ryzen 9 4900HS compared to a desktop Ryzen 5 3600?

Also, I need to consider the budget and since VR is more GPU intensive, I am considering getting a cheaper Ryzen 3400G for the desktop.
