Ryzen 1700, 64 GB Ram desired, speeds, "ranks", etc - any guidance?

I have Ryzen 1700 which I want to pair with Asus X370 prime and load once with 64 GB of RAM.
intended use is double boot system for Win 10 (gaming) and Ubuntu (everything else, transcoding video ,etc).

What RAM speeds should I be looking for (beyond "look at vendor VQL")?
Is it true that if I go with 64 GB ram , the max speed I would get is 2133?
how important is RAM speed vs latence (14,15, 16) ?

Any good guides on this?

I do not intend to overclock for forseeable future, however if buying once something that would give me ability to do so later (or remove such ability), I would like to know that

Thank you!

Exploratory route: Get 2666 MT/s C15, try booting, and reduce the rate if motherboard does not support.

While higher rate RAM has higher latency in cycles, latency in time is about the same. Formula for latency in time: (latency in cycles)/(rate / 2)
2133 MT/s C13: 12.2 ns
2400 MT/s C14: 11.7 ns
2666 MT/s C15: 11.3 ns
Rates higher than 2666 MT/s need 1.35 V (except 2800 MT/s, which is a non-standard rate).

I'm testing out 4x 16GB kingston 2400 c17 ecc mem
No problems so far at the stock settings, I havn't tried to overclock.
From what i've read the problems only start if you are trying for fast mem speeds like 2800-3200+.

my gigabyte board has limited memory timing settings.
I'm hoping this changes soon in an update.

I'm running 4x8GB dual rank DIMMs, which is pretty much the worst combination you can run on Ryzen currently. 2400 CL15 is what they are rated for and is what they do on the ASRock Taichi. I haven't been able to get 2666 CL16 to work, though if I loosen the timings more I may be able to.

4x16GB would be dual rank DIMMs, so 2400 should be doable on the right hardware/BIOS. More would be nice, but I wouldn't expect beyond 2666 just yet. May improve with future updates.

Thank you all. I keep an eye on the QVL list (which seem to be updated weekly now) and wondering what else I should be considering

heat modules on RAM - how important? only matters if one overclocks with high voltage?
dual channels / quad channels, Ryzen is only dual channel, correct?

Any difference in buying 16x4 "kit" vs buying two 16x2 same kits? is 16x4 just means they tested it together?

Thank you

I just wanted to update.
I got my 4 sticks of non-matched 16GB 2400 running at 2666 16-16-16-14-36 1.25v
Fully stable, although it required a lot of reboots before the bios would accept it.

Do you need 64GB just for games playing? Have you ever monitored how much RAM was used when you were playing a game?

If you have so much memory, then run Linux in a virtual machine.

He doesn't have to justify his own computer and his usages.

Well, guess then he didn't have to ask. He can just buy the most expensive parts and put them together.

Dual booting is so outdated, especially if he has very good parts.
