So my kid has a GT 1030 and I am using a GTX 750 1G. He been having problem playing his games such as MS flight sim and American Truck Simulator (with several different mods installed) as they lag a lot.

When I checked on PcPartPicker, two deals came up for the last few days that look really good.

A MSI Rx 560 Aero ITX 4G - 1024 - 129 bucks after rebate

A PNY GTX 1050 Ti 4G - 169 bucks

I know the 1050 Ti would be faster.. However, would the 560 be good for his sims and occasional Fortnite and Roblox? How about MMo such as Bless? He has his eyes on Bless for awhile since it looks... pretty.. I told him if I get a new card for him as his bday present, it better lasts for at least 4 years or more (because I been using my 650 that long).

Anyone has issue or experience playing Sims or MMOs with the RX 560? I still haven't run this by the wife.. she would probably not be happy once she knows the prices!

*damn, should have made the title RX 560 1024 or GTX 1050 Ti, instead of 'and', no way i am getting both for him!!!

What are the specs of the system he has? If you want a dGPU that will last four years look at the GTX 1060 6GB. That should last longer then the Rx 560 and the GTX 1050Ti.

This isn't really a good time to buy a card you want to last for four years. I think the GTX 10 series came out almost two years ago. They ought to be coming out with new cards real soon now. Although they say they won't in "the foreseeable future". Maybe give him cash and try to teach him the value of patience?

A quick look around for Bless minimum sys requirements reveals a min config of GTX 760 and a Core i5 4c/4t.

That means the RX 560 will cut it, but the 1050 Ti would be a better choice to pass that min threshold. Considering your options and the need to make it an anniversary present I would present your options as following:
  • buy the cheaper RX 560 but require upgrade in 2 years
  • buy the faster 1050Ti and require upgrade in 2-3 years
Considering the price difference between the two options you can easily go either way. Also, avoid buying anything with less less compute power like the 1050 or the RX 560 that comes with 896 stream processors (it will be specified in spec sheet, along with a lower memory speed of 6000Mhz instead of 7000).

Planning to have these cards last 4+ years as relevant hardware for a kid is unrealistic. In 2-3 years from now you can easily expect another MMO named Cless to come with GTX 960 min sys req.

PS: Normally I would advise to wait for the new Nvidia cards as well, but considering the time relevance of the gift and the fact that Nvidia is more likely to come with big chips first and small chips later... things can get complicated.
PS2: Check Bless performance reviews, this game might be problematic in it's current stage.

Thx guys. He has a i5 5200U with 16 GB of RAM in a CoolerMaster Elite 130 mini-itx case. Not top of the line CPU and the HD graphic could handle most games.. except graphic heavy titles like simulators, especially if you have add-on/plugin installed. Now that I checked the link from coercitiv, I should tell him to wait before jumping into Bless.

Yeah, I should be more realistic knowing how video card market works. Probably will keep the card for two years and then have him do side jobs like mowing lawns or walking dogs to earn money himself to buy whatever he wants.

1050 Ti is tempting but man.. damn mining caused the prices to be so high. Wife just shot it down as that was over her budget. Will probably pick up that 560 as it comes with a rebate, and would drop the price to below 130 bucks. Hope it to would run his flight sims smoother.

Prices are stabilizing as we speak, inventories are building back up, you should see better prices this summer. If you're having second thoughts you can always take Ken g6's advice and put the money aside for a while.

I'm a bit puzzled by the CPU though - that's a mobile SKU.

Get a used gtx960 4gb, its as fast as a gtx1050ti and cheaper.
If you can overclock ,the gtx960 will give you 15% more performance in actual games.

I got his cpu from ebay a month ago and that was the model # they listed as at the time all I cared was if it was a LGA 1155. I bid and won. Didn't really look at the model number when I activated windows since it worked.

Now that i checked the system info and it is actually a i5-3450s. It is a bit slow than the regular 3450. But for 60 bucks I guess it was an ok deal.

Oh, kid decided to wait a little so I can get him a faster card. Also I will look into the 960 too if I can overclock it. Thx happy m.

flight simulator x is very heavy on the CPU side, so I would recommend doing some testing/research to know if a faster VGA is going to help solving performance issues with that.
